बुल्ला की जाना मैं कौन x 4                        Bulla, I don't know who I am.

ना मैं मोमिन विच मसीता                          I am not a believer in mosque
ना मैं विच कुफर दिया रीता                        Nor a pagan disciple of false rites
ना मैं पाकन विच पलीता                            Nor am I pure amongst the impure

ना मैं अंदर वेद किताबा                              I am not inside the Vedic texts
ना मैं रेहन्दा भांग शराबा                            Neither in opium, nor in wine,
ना मैं रेहन्दा मस्त ख़राबा                          Nor in the drunkard's intoxicated craze 

ना मैं शादी ना घमनाकी                             I am neither happiness nor in sorrow
ना मैं विच पलीती पाकी                             Neither filthy, nor pure
ना मैं आबी ना मैं खाकी                             Not from water, not from earth
ना मैं आतिश ना मैं पौन                            I am not born of the fire, nor from earth

बुल्ला की जाना मैं कौन x 4                       Bulla, I don't know who I am.

ना मैं अरबी ना लहोरि                               I am neither Arab, nor Lahori
ना मैं हिन्दी शहर नागौरी                           Neither Indian, nor Nagauri
ना हिंदू ना तुर्क पशौरी                               I am not a Hindu, Turk or Pashori

ना मैं भेट मज़हब दा पाया                          I have not found the secret of religion 
ना मैं आदम हाव्वा जाया                           Nor am I from Adam or Eve
ना कोई अपना नाम धराया                        I am not in this name by which I am known by

अव्वल आखर आप नू जाना                      I am the first, I am the last
ना कोई दूजा होर पहचाना                       I have never known otherwise  
मैं तों ना कोई होर सयाना                        I am not the wisest among them all

ना मैं मूसा ना फरोह                                I am neither Moses, nor Pharaoh
ना मैं जागन ना विच सौन्न                     Neither awake, nor in sleeping daze 
ना मैं आतिश ना मैं पौन                         I am neither born from fire, nor from air 
ना मैं रेहन्दा विच नादौन                        Nor do I live in Naudaun 
ना मैं बैठन ना विच भौन                        I am not still, nor moving

Baba Bulleh Shah, whose real name was Abdullah Shah, was a Punjabi Sufi poet and humanist. Baba Bulleh Shah was a direct descendant of Muhammad through the progeny of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Gillani of Baghdad. Bulleh Shah practiced the Sufi tradition of Punjabi poetry established by poets like Shah Hussain (1538 -- 1599), Sultan Bahu (1629 -- 1691), and Shah Sharaf (1640 -- 1724). Bulleh Shah lived in the same period as the famous Sindhi Sufi poet, Shah Abdul Latif Bhatai (1689 -- 1752). Bulleh Shah lived a mere 400 miles from Mir Taqi Mir (1723 -- 1810) of Agra.
