Learning Sanskrit by Fresh Approach – Lesson 80

संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य अशीतितमः (८०) पाठः ।
In the previous lesson, it was mentioned “क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवति, न उपकरणे” This is not actually correct. Or this is a statement to primarily emphasize the importance of सत्त्व as the basic essential.  However for more detailed analysis of what all things are necessary for सिद्धये सर्वकर्मणाम् i.e. for fulfillment of tasks, following shloka’s from 18th chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता present a good analysis, almost as a gist of management science -
पञ्चैतानि महाबाहो कारणानि निबोध मे ।
सांख्ये कृतान्ते प्रोक्तानि सिद्धये सर्वकर्मणाम् ॥१८-१३॥

४ टिप्पणयः ।
४.१ To decipher the meter by first setting the verses in four quarters -
In both the verses, in all quarters, fifth is short (1) and sixth is long, the seventh is alternately long and short, thus conforming to अनुष्टुभ् छन्दः i.e. श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयं सर्वत्र लघु पञ्चमम् । द्विचतुःपादयोर्-र्‍हस्वम् सप्तमं दीर्घमन्ययोः ॥
४.२ These two verses summarise the elements of fulfillment of tasks. Since management is primarily fulfilment of tasks, these verses summarise Management Pilosophy. In 1989, I quoted these verses when delivering a talk on “Managemnt Challenges in the Third Millenium” at the silver jubilee programme of Indian Institute of Industrial Managers. As the topic suggests, I had to make a prediction of management challenges as would emerge in the third millenium. Since I am not an astrologer, and the prediction is to be for a period of 1000 years, I thought of indulging in statistical extrapolation. For doing statistical extrapolation of management thought I looked for database of management thought as old as possible. And these verses came handy. As is mentioned in the first (18-13) verse, the elements of management detailed in (18-14) were mentioned by Lord Krishna on the battle-field. That was some 5000 years ago. But, in the verse (18-13) these were pronounced towards the end of kRuta epoch in the sAnkhya philosophy.
The epochs are said to be following the sequence kRuta-tretA-dwApAra-kali. MahAbhArata and kRuShNAvatAra are said to be during dwApAra-yuga. That means between kRutAnta and mahAbhArata, whole of tretA-yuga passed. That is why the philosophy had to be retold ! But basically the management thought being as old, it becomes logical to resort to statistical extrapolation, right ?
As an exercise in statistics I laid out data of management thoughts as follows -
time-references – (1) kRutAnta (2) Classical theory of economics (3) Modern Management
element (1-1) अधिष्ठानम्  (2-1) Land (3-1) Methods Sound Engineering Practices
Element (1-2) कर्ता (2-2) Labour (3-2) Men
Element (1-3) पृथग्विधम् करणम् (2-3) Capital (3-3) Money (3-4) Machines, (3-5) materials
Element (1-4) विविधाश्च पृथक्चेष्टाः (2-4) Organisation (3-6) Markets, Management
Element (1-5) दैवम् (2-4) Organisation (3-6) Markets, Management
By the numbers given, it can be seen that there is good one-to-one correspondence in first three elements. Actually in Modern Management they speak of 6 M’s of Management – management of Men, Machines, Materials, Methods, Money and Markets. Classical theory of economics, post-industrial revolution from late eighteenth century, in respect of economics of production speaks of four factors of production – Land Laboour, Capital and Organisation. Here, these verses detail पञ्च कारणानि | This makes seeing one-to-one correspondence for elements 4 and 5 somewhat difficult.
It came to mind that the 6 M’s of management yet do not cover overall management. So I thought it good to put “Management” as an independent item against Elements (1-4) and (1-5)
I listed (3-3), 3-4) and (3-5) against (1-3). The word पृथग्विधम् provides for all these !
४.३ Element (1-5) दैवम् merits some discussion. Theory of management by objectives (MBO) contends that if all things needed to achieve a certain objective have been managed properly, objective must be achieved. But we do see failures. Most common failures are in Marketing. If there are six companies competing for a tender, only one may succeed. Or if the order-quantity is split between two or three suppliers, that success is also a partial success. In Geetaa we are cautioned right from chapter 2 that कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन (२-४७) This is possibly re-emphasized by the mention of Element (1-5) दैवम्
In Hindi there is a good proverb, “समयसे पहले और समयसे ज्यादा किसीको कुछ नही मिलता” One would get only as much and only at a time as dictated by destiny.
One English translation of the word दैवम् is “coincidence”, which by its etymology means
co = alongside, together
incide = combine
It was with this thought that I put (2-4) Organisation against (1-5) दैवम् That does make good one-to-one correspondence, right ?
Yet दैवम् has also implicit in it the element of time. That I think is eminently missing in the theory of economics or in the theory of 6 M’s. Can we say दैवम् means Timing and Time-Management also, apart from co+incidence or Organisation / Management ?
Just for an example of Timing and Time-management, may I say, YogAsanAni are helpful for Health-Management. But they have to be exercised at the right time of the day. One needs to manage one’s time to be able to provide proper time and timing for doing YogAsanAni Yet results will differ from person to person. फलेषु अधिकारः मा कदाचन !
४.४ People seem to criticise such concepts as fatalistic philosophy – philosophy laying stress on fate. But why do they have to often hold the count-down of launching of space-shuttles ? Why did they have to stop the 27 km long (or deep) proton accelerator far too soon ? What goes wrong in these managements ? Possibly what goes wrong is not respecting the element दैवम्
Respecting दैवम् should simply mean being prayerful. In Indian tradition we embark on every other project by first offering prayers. We do this even when getting up from the bed, begging pardon of Mother Earth, pardon for putting our foot down for standing up !
४.५ Is there an aura of arrogance in Modern Management Thought, “when everything is done right, it must work” ? Arrogance is अहंकारः foremost among all vices. Geetaa cautions us of this vice so many times ! But अहंकारः is so minute, so difficult to eliminate it ! When I post my lessons and receive a positive appreciation, don’t I feel some अहंकारः that I composed a good lesson ? That very thought “I composed” is अहंकारः
४.६ I do not know how I shall transcend all अहंकारः Only way seems to be “to be prayerful” श्रीपतेः पदयुगम् स्मरणीयम् !
शुभमस्तु ।

य-म-न-स-भ-ल-ग इति गणाः ।
अत्र शिखरिणी वृत्तम् । अस्य लक्षणपदम् – रसैर्रुद्रैश्छिन्नः यमनसभलागः शिखरिणी ।
४.२ All the description of the sun, that his chariot has only one wheel, the seven horses of his chariot are reined by serpents, his charioteer has no legs are from mythology related to sun. sun’s chariot having seven horses is also mentioned in Rig-Veda. (Ref. –  CLICK HERE)
More details about Sun God are also given at CLICK HERE
४.३ Whereas many concepts about Sun and his chariot are mythological, one point is absolutely true to astrophysics. That is about all astronomical objects spinning and orbiting with no physical support whatsoever the aspect of निरालम्बः मार्गः !!! And that is true not only for sun but true for all the astronomical objects.
४.४ People will also argue that it is not the sun which goes around in the sky above. But it is also true that there are hundreds and thousands of stars, especially in the milky way. Every star is a sun and has its own solar system. In as much as the milky way is not seen every other night, all those solar systems also keep orbiting. Likewise hence our solar system ought to be orbiting. So, our sun also ought to be orbiting.
४.५ A concept of thousands of suns is well-mentioned in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता -
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता ।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥११-१२॥
४.६ All mythology is not collections of myths. There are often many scientific truths shrouded inside the garb of mythology. “Explore and find the truths !” says ईशावास्योपनिषत् – हिरण्मयेन पात्रेण सत्यस्यापि हितम् मुखम् । तत्त्वम् पूषन्नपावृणु सत्यधर्माय दृष्टये ॥

First line conforms to इन्द्रवज्रा-वृत्तम् |
Other three lines conform to उपेन्द्रवज्रा-वृत्तम् |
A verse combining two meters of same number of syllables can be called as उपजाति-वृत्तम् |
Or, considering that majority of the quarters conform to उपेन्द्रवज्रा-वृत्तम्, meter of the verse can be called as उपेन्द्रवज्रा-वृत्तम् |
४.२ This verse and also the one in the previous lesson are from नीतिशतकम् by भर्तृहरि | This verse is 81st. A short commentary on the verse is as follows –
४.३ In the first line all विसर्गाः except the last one have become the sound “र्”. That makes some alliteration अनुप्रास । Also in the second line three successive words have starting  sound “भ”. One is left wondering at the poetic capabilities of these poets to compose meaningful verses conforming to meters, weaving alliteration, adding apt illustrations and leading to eternally valid morals, verses which can be sung by anybody even if one does not have a musical voice ! It all becomes so easy to commit them to memory.
४.४ The verse also brings to mind poetic prose of Sarojini Naidu, who was lauded as the Nightingale of India. A few sentences from her obituary to महात्मा गान्धी have stuck in my memory. That obituary was a lesson in a textbook. The lesson was a transcription of her speech relayed on All India Radio soon after Bapuji’s death. She said, “My father do not rest. Do not allow us to rest. Keep us to our pledge. Give us strength to fulfil your promise. May we be Your heirs, your stewards, your descendants, your stewards, …”
Do not allow us to rest. Keep us to our pledge. This is what this सुभाषितम् also emphasizes.
४.५ This सुभाषितम् underscores laudable characteristics of people with grit and determination. This is explained by the example of how Gods undertook churning of the ocean क्षीरसागरः to get nectar of immortality.
Everything of that exercise of churning of the ocean was of unimaginable proportions. The whole episode is fabulous, like a fable. They used mountain मेरु as the churner. They used the serpent वासुकी to tie around the mountain and to churn the mountain. Fourteen jewels are said to have emanated during the churning. The fourteen jewels are listed in a verse –
लक्ष्मीः कौस्तुभ-पारिजातक-सुरा-धन्वन्तरिश्चन्द्रमा |
गावो कामदुधाः सुरेश्वर-गजो रम्भादि-देवाङ्गना |
अश्वः सप्तमुखो विषं हरिधनुः शङ्खोऽमृतम् चाम्बुधेः |
रत्नानीह चतुर्दश प्रतिदिनम् कुर्युः सदा मङ्गलम् ||
These are not jewels of the ordinary sense. These are all unique by themselves, hence jewels. That is why they are called as महार्ह in the सुभाषितम् of this lesson. As can be noted in the above श्लोक, अमृतम् i.e. nectar is listed last. And getting nectar was the objective of the whole exercise.
The exercise was carried on until the final objective was achieved, not being distracted by the unique “jewels” which emanated also undeterred by the poison, which also emanated. शिव dared to consume the poison. To quell the effect of the poison he tied a snake around his throat and wore the moon on his head. The poison burnt his throat dark blue and he became known as नीलकण्ठ ! Effect of the poison was finally quelled by his uttering रामनाम !
The story has traveled around the world. At the Bangkok airport in Thailand they have erected a marvellous scene with idols of Gods and demons churning the ocean.
४-६ Because churning of the ocean yielded the jewels, an ocean is called also as रत्नाकरः one who makes jewels ! We have studied earlier सुभाषितानि where there was reference of pearls being formed in sea-shells by drops of rain when constellation स्वाति is in the skies.
४.७ The next 82nd सुभाषितम् in नीतिशतकम् is also on the same theme. We can study that in the next lesson.

This is वसन्ततिलका-वृत्तम् | अस्य लक्षणपदमस्ति – उक्ता वसंततिलका तभजाः जगौ गः ।
४.२ In this सुभाषितम् persons are classified into three categories. Most aspects of life can be analysed by such three-fold classification. Here the three classes are called as lowly, mediocre, excellent – नीच, मध्यम, उत्तम | In the fourteenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता the classes are called as, तामस, राजस सात्विक । In the seventeenth chapter, faiths and beliefs, diet, आहार, यज्ञ, तप and दान are also classified by such three-fold classification. In the eighteenth chapter, ज्ञानम्, कर्म, कर्ता, बुद्धिः, धृतिः and सुखम् are again classified by such three-fold classification.
Thus such three-fold classification becomes a ready checklist for anyone to understand for oneself, where one stands and what should be the goals and directions.
४.३ There is another सुभाषितम् on the same theme. We can study that in the next lesson.

Learning Sanskrit by Fresh Approach – Lesson No. 75

संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य पञ्च-सप्ततितमः (७५) पाठः ।
Mr. Jaideep Joshi suggested that there should be a lesson to detail how the meter of a verse is deciphered. As such many examples of this aspect have been studied in many lessons. Especially in lesson No. 36 method of naming the gaNaaH ( A set of three syllables is called as a गणः) was detailed, using also the phrase यमाताराजभानसलगं
But many such rules can be memorized if they are in verse form. Here are three verses given in Apte’s dictionary under Appendix I on Sanskrit Prosody -
सानुस्वारश्च दीर्घश्च विसर्गी च गुरुर्भवेत् ।
वर्णः संयोगपूर्वश्च तथा पादान्तगोऽपि वा ॥

४ टिप्पणयः ।
४.१ Verse 1 summarises the rule on when to count the weightage (मात्रा) of a syllable (वर्ण) as 2. Obviously, when none of the conditions in this rule applies, then the weightage is 1.
४.२ Verses 2 and 3 are two verses dealing in the same theme, summarising the rule on how गण-s (sets of three syllables) are to be named. I have added in अन्वयः and अनुवादः for verses 2 and 3, examples from the phrase यमाताराजभानसलगं । Obviously after making all sets of three, any syllable(s), one or two, left over at the end, will have weightage either 1 or 2. Again if only one syllable is left at the end, its weightage will always be 2 as per verse 1.
४.३ Since every गण has 3 syllables, which can be either लघु or गुरु, all the possible number of combinations, thus all types of गण-s are covered in the phrase यमाताराजभानसलगं and also in verse 2.
४.४ Systematic deciphering meter of a verse should proceed in following steps
  • Step 1 arrange the verse in four quarters चत्वारः पादाः
  • Step 2 count the number of syllables in each quarter वर्णसंख्या
  • Step 3 note the weightage of each syllable, whether 1 or 2 मात्राः
  • Step 4 check if there is a pattern in the four quarters for the number of syllables and their weightages
  • Step 5 The pattern becomes more clear when the weightages of the syllables are made into groups of three i.e. by identifying their गण-s
  • Step 6 Different patterns are called as छंदः or वृत्तम् They have been given different names. Names can be found in a reference book on Sanskrit prosody. Nearly 110 patterns are detailed in the Appendix in Apte’s dictionary.
  • Step 7 The patterns are also explained by लक्षणपदम् ।
४.५  To decipher the meters of these three verses by following this procedure -
सानुस्वारश्च दीर्घश्च । वर्णाः ८
२-२-२-२-१ २-२-(२) इति मात्राः ।
Note tnat
- the syllable नु in सानुस्वारश्च has inherent weightage 1.  But because it precedes a compound consonant स्वा its weightage becomes 2.
- the syllable र in सानुस्वारश्च has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant श्च its weightage becomes 2.
- the syllable र्घ in दीर्घश्च has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant श्च its weightage becomes 2
- the last syllable “श्च” has inherent weightage 1. But because it is in the end its weightage is 2 and the value is put in parenthesis.
(२-२-२)-(२-१ २)-२-(२)
म र ग ग इति गणाः ।
विसर्गी च गुरुर्भवेत् । वर्णाः ८
१-२-२ १ १-२-१-२ इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- The syllable स in  विसर्गी has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant र्गी its weightage becomes 2.
- The syllable रु in गुरुर्भवेत् has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant र्भ its weightage becomes 2.
- the syllable at the end is त् without any vowel mixed into it. So, it has weightage zero and is not hence to be counted.
(१-२-२) (१ १-२)-१-२
य स ल ग इति गणाः ।

वर्णः संयोगपूर्वश्च ।
२-२ २-२-१-२-२-(२) इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- The syllable व in  वर्णः has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant र्णः its weightage becomes 2.
- The syllable र्णः in वर्णः has inherent weightage 2 because it is विसर्गी it has विसर्ग with it.
- the syllable सं has weightage 2 because it is सानुस्वार, i.e. it has the symbolic dot above it.
- the last syllable “श्च” has inherent weightage 1. But because it is in the end its weightage becomes 2 and the value is put in parenthesis.
(२-२ २)-(२-१-२)-२-(२)
म र ग ग इति गणाः ।

तथा पादान्तगोऽपि वा । वर्णाः ८
१-२ २२-१-२-१ २ इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- The symbol ऽ just connotes a syllable which is silent, is not pronounced and has zero weightage, is neither counted nor shown.
(१-२ २)(२-१-२)-१ २
य र ल ग इति गणाः ।
४.५.१ It can be seen that
- वर्णाः ८ shows a good discipline in number of syllables in each quarter.
- The fifth syllable has weightage 1 in all quarters.
- Sixth syllable has weightage 2 in all quarters
- The seventh syllable has weightage 2 in first and third and has weightage 1 in second and fourth.
- Since the गणाः are म र ग ग in the first, य स ल ग in the second, म र ग ग in the third and य र ल ग in the fourth, there is no cognisable discipline in total number of मात्राः or of गणाः ।
४.५.२ By the above analysis, the verse qualifies the characteristics of अनुष्टुभ्-छंदः ।
४.५.३ लक्षणपदम् of अनुष्टुभ्-छंदः is -
श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयम् ।
सर्वत्र लघु पञ्चमम् ।
द्विचतुष्पादयोर्र्हस्वम् ।
दीर्घोऽन्यत्र च सर्वदा ॥
४.६ Categories of meters -
  • A meter based on number of syllables in each quarter the meter is of category अक्षरवृत्त
  • when अक्षरवृत्त has same total number of syllables वर्णसंख्या (here, वर्णाः ८) in all four quarters, the meter is of category समवृत्त
  • when total number of syllables in two quarters are identical, the meter is of category अर्धवृत्त
  • when number of syllables in the quarters are unequal, the meter is of category विषमवृत्त
  • When समवृत्त has also a discipline of गणाः then the meter is of category अक्षरगणवृत्त
  • when a meter is based on total of weightages of syllables मात्रासंख्या the meter is of category मात्रावृत्त or जातिवृत्त
  • if a verse has no discipline either by number of syllables or total of weightages of syllables, it is of category  छंद. Literal meaning of छंद is whim or hobby or uninhibited expression.
४.७ Deciphering meter of verse 2 -
आदिमध्यावसानेषु । वर्णाः ८
२-१-२-२-१-२-२-(२) इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- The syllable म in  आदिमध्यावसानेषु has inherent weightage 1. But because it precedes a compound consonant ध्या its weightage becomes 2.
- the syllable at the end षु has inherent weightage 1. But because it is in the end its weightage becomes 2 and the value is put in parenthesis.
यरता यान्ति लाघवम् । वर्णाः ८
१-१-२ २-१ २-१-२ इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- the syllable at the end is वम् has weightage 2 because it is सानुस्वार, since the consonant म् is a nasal sound. The nasal sound is to be written by the consonant and not by अनुस्वार, when the nasal sound is at the end of a quarter or of a sentence.
भजसा गौरवं यान्ति । वर्णाः ८
१-१-२ २-१-२ २-(२) इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- the syllable वं has weightage 2 because it is सानुस्वार, i.e. it has the symbolic dot above it.
- the syllable at the end न्ति has inherent weightage 1. But because it is in the end its weightage becomes 2 and the value is put in parenthesis.
मनौ तु गुरुलाघवम् । वर्णाः ८
१-२ १ १-१-२-१-२ इति मात्राः ।
Note -
- the syllable at the end is वम् has weightage 2 because it is सानुस्वार, since the consonant म् is a nasal sound. The nasal sound is to be written by the consonant and not by अनुस्वार, when the nasal sound is at the end of a quarter or of a sentence.
४.७.१ It can be seen that
- वर्णाः ८ shows a good discipline in number of syllables in each quarter.
४.७.२ By the above analysis, the verse 2 also qualifies the characteristics of अनुष्टुभ्-छंदः ।
४.८ To decipher the meter of verse 3 -
४.९ In these three verses there are words such as यरताः भजसाः मनौ which are more in the style of acronyms. These words cannot be found in any dictionary. They are coined to explain the concepts, just as acronyms are also specially coined words. Considering how ancient Sanskrit is, it seems “acronyms” is an invention of Sanskrit language !
शुभमस्तु ।

३.२ दण्डः तु अगतिका गतिः | = Yet, punishment (or threat of dire consequences) should be a means of last resort. Punishment (say, death penalty) would result in leading to a point of no return, would leave no chance for redemption.
४ टिप्पणयः |

४.१ To decipher the meter –
उपायाः सामं दामं च | वर्णाः ८
1-2-2 2-2 2-2 (2)
भेदो दण्डस्तथैव च | वर्णाः ८
2-2 2-2 1-2-1-(2)
सम्यक्प्रयुक्ता सिद्ध्येयुर्  | वर्णाः ८
2-2 1-2 2-2-2-(2)
दण्डस्त्वगतिका गतिः | वर्णाः ८
2-2 1-1 1-2-1-2
This seems to be अनुष्टुभ्-छन्दः |  But the fifth letter is not of weightage 1 in first and third quarters, though sixth is of weightage 2, as it should be. Seventh is also of weightage 2 and 1 alternately.
४.२ As mentioned at (३.२) दण्डः तु अगतिका गतिः can be interpreted variously in three different ways and all the meanings are very appropriate. It would be good to recapitulate them.
दण्डः तु अगतिका गतिः =
  • punishment (or threat of dire consequences) should be a means of last resort.
  • Punishment (say, death penalty) would result in leading to a point of no return,
  • would leave no chance for redemption
४.३ The best part of advice or moral of the सुभाषितम् is this last दण्डः तु अगतिका गतिः ।
४.४ Thanks to Dr. Avinash Sathaye for sending this सुभाषितम् for study.

Supplement to Lesson # 73

Supplement to Lesson # 73
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य त्रिसप्ततितमस्य पाठस्य परिशिष्टम् |
This supplement is to present मल्लिनाथी टीका on the श्लोक studied in Lesson # 73. Let us first have the श्लोक for ready reference –
जातं वंशे भुवनविदिते पुष्करावर्तकानाम् |
जानामि त्वाम् प्रकृतिपुरुषं कामरूपं मघोनः |
तेनार्थित्वं त्वयि विधिवशाद्दूरबन्धुर्गतोऽहम्  |
याञ्चा मोघा वरमधिगुणे नाधमे लब्धकामा ||
मल्लिनाथी टीका is one continuous narration. I am detailing it into 12 paragraphs, which helps me to understand it better and also comes handy to add notes paragraph by paragraph.
१ जातमिति |
Note – जातमिति = जातम् + इति ।
  • (१.१) This is sort of a declaration, मल्लिनाथ’s style to say, “This is about the श्लोक starting with “जातम्”
  • (१.२) इति (= so be it)
  • (१.३) Every मल्लिनाथी टीका starts in this style.
Note –
  • (२.१) It seems, in times of मल्लिनाथ, it was commonplace to resort to सन्धि and समास at will, regardless of how long a word would be | That is why to understand the टीका also, one has to employ “सन्धि-विच्छेदान् कृत्वा समासानां पदानि च दर्शयित्वा” e.g. –
वर्तमानार्थत्वे = वर्तमान-अर्थत्वे |
षष्ठ्यन्ततानियमात्समासो न = षष्ठी-अन्तता-नियमात् समासः न |
  • (२.२) It seems, by saying “इति निषेधात्” मल्लिनाथ does not approve of कालिदास to have composed a word like “भुवनविदिते” | मल्लिनाथ quotes references of various सूत्राणि of पाणिनी (पा. सू.) to substantiate his disapproval.
३  पुष्करावर्तकानाम् – पुष्कराश्चावर्तकाश्च केचिन्मेघानां श्रेष्ठास्तेषां वंशे जातम् | महाकुलप्रसूतमित्यर्थः |
Note –
  • (३.१) this मल्लिनाथी to be read as –
पुष्कराः च आवर्तकाः च केचित् मेघानां श्रेष्ठाः तेषां वंशे जातम् | महा-कुल-प्रसूतं इति अर्थः |
  • (३.२) The book in which I found मल्लिनाथी of this श्लोक was edited by पण्डित रामचन्द्र दतात्रेय दीक्षित किञ्जवडेकर-शास्त्री. The editor has added his own notes in मराठी, saying –
“whereas मल्लिनाथ seems to regard पुष्कर and आवर्तक as two different eminent clouds, some learned people suggest derivation of पुष्करावर्तकानाम् to mean “पुष्करं जलम् आवर्तयन्ति ‘भ्रामयन्ति’ इति पुष्करावर्तकाः ”
  • (३.३) By this note of the editor, पुष्करावर्तकानाम् would mean those clouds, which migrate and spread water, which has nourishment
  • (३.४) In an additional note the editor mentions –
“as mentioned in ब्रह्माण्डपुराणम् clouds are formed in 3 different ways – (1) from fire (2) from breathing of Brahman and (3) from the wings of mountains slashed by इन्द्र. Clouds of the third type are called as “पुष्करावर्तक” !
  • (३.५) This brings to mind the mention in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता –
यज्ञात् भवति पर्जन्यो ….. ||३-१४|| …. एवम् प्रवर्तितं चक्रम् …. ||३-१६|| Clouds are an essential and integral part of this cycle and the related यज्ञ ।
  • (३.६) Dr. Avinash Sathaye commented -
The word पुष्कर has many meanings and I would not worry about the meaning in आपटे, which refers to this very verse.
The two words पुष्कर  and आवर्तक seem to be designed to indicate powerful mighty beings among clouds. So, they may cause devastation.
  • (३.७) कालिदास just used the word “पुष्करावर्तकानाम्” and that generates so much of commentary ! What meaning कालिदास himself had in mind becomes a curiosity. But, as poets would be wont to, स्वयमपि लिखितं स्वयम् न वाचयति :-)
४  कामरूपम् इच्छाधीनविग्रहम् | दुर्गादिसंचारक्षममित्यर्थः |
Here,
  • (४.१) इच्छाधीनविग्रहम् = इच्छा-अधीन-विग्रहम् | मल्लिनाथ seems to suggest that the word “कामरूपम्” is to be deciphered (विग्रह) as “इच्छा-अधीन” meaning “wilful” or
  • (४.२) मल्लिनाथ would translate कामरूपम् to mean “one who has his विग्रह (= countenance) at the command of his will (इच्छाधीन)
  • (४.३) Clouds assume any shape and form, right ? Is there is any rule for what shape and form a cloud should assume where and when ? They are “कामरूप”
  • (४.४) मल्लिनाथ also adds –
दुर्गादिसंचारक्षममित्यर्थः = (यः) दुर्ग-आदि-संचार-क्षमः (तम् ) इति अर्थः |
meaning, “(to him, who is) capable of wading across mountains etc.”
५  मघोनः इन्द्रस्य प्रकृतिपुरुषं प्रधानपुरुषं जानामि |
  • (५.१) मल्लिनाथ first gives simple meaning of मघोनः (= इन्द्रस्य) ।
  • (५.२) He then interprets प्रकृतिपुरुष to mean “प्रधान-पुरुष” i.e. chieftain of इन्द्र. इन्द्र is regarded as the deity commanding the rains. So, a cloud is fittingly the chieftain of इन्द्र !
  • (५.३) Dr. Avinash Sathaye commented –
First of all, you missed the opportunity of explaining the variants of मघवन्
The natural declension of this word would have produced मघवतः and not  मघोनः .
That is why the पाणिनी-सूत्र was formed.
The word मघ does have a meaning of power/wealth and hence it is the name of इन्द्र.
६ तेन महाकुलप्रसूतत्वादिगुणयोगित्वेन हेतुना विधिवशात् दैवायत्तत्वात् |
“विधिर्विधाने दैवे च –“ (३-३-९९) इत्यमरः |
“वशमायत्ते वशमिच्छाप्रभुत्वयोः ” इति विश्वः |
Here –
  • (६.१) महाकुलप्रसूतत्वादिगुणयोगित्वेन = महा-कुल-प्रसूतत्व-आदि-गुण-योगित्वेन
  • (६.२) मल्लिनाथ gives meaning of विधिवशात् = दैवायत्तत्वात् (दैव-आयत्त-त्व –> तस्मात्) I am wondering what the verbal root is for the past participle “आयत्त”
  • (६.३) वशमिच्छाप्रभुत्वयोः = वशं इच्छा-प्रभुत्व-योः
७  दूरे बन्धुर्यस्य स दूरबन्धुः वियुक्तभार्यः अहं त्वय्यर्थित्वं गतः |
Here
  • (७.१) मल्लिनाथ first gives the समास-विग्रह for the word दूरबन्धुः ।
  • (७.२) मल्लिनाथ then adds his interpretation of दूरबन्धुः as “वियुक्तभार्यः” which itself is a सामासिक-शब्दः “वियुक्तः भार्यायाः” i.e. separated from wife”.
  • (७.३) मल्लिनाथ seems to be alluding to this interpretation since right in the first verse of मेघदूतम्, कालिदास has mentioned “कान्ताविरह”, i.e. separation from wife. So it is clear right from the first verse that in this instance बन्धुः is भार्या only.
८  ननु याचकस्य याञ्चायाम् याच्यगुणोत्कर्षः  कुत्रोपयुज्यत इत्याशङ्क्य – दैवाद्यान्चाभङ्गेऽपि लाघवदोषाभाव एवोपयोग इत्याह – याञ्चेति || तथा हि |
Here
  • (८.१) By employing याञ्चेति (= याञ्चा + इति) at the end of this टीका, मल्लिनाथ seems to have dwelt in this टीका on the word याञ्चा ।
  • (८.२) By  “सन्धि-विच्छेदान् कृत्वा समासानां पदानि च दर्शयित्वा” this would read as –
ननु याचकस्य याञ्चायाम् याच्य-गुण-उत्कर्षः कुत्र उपयुज्यते इति आशङ्क्य – दैवात् याञ्चा-भङ्गे अपि लाघव-दोष-अभावः एव उपयोगः  इति आह – याञ्चा इति ।
  • (८.३) Here मल्लिनाथ has dwelt on the trinity, याचक, याञ्चा, याच्य i.e. (1) one who is praying or requesting, soliciting (2) the prayer or the request itself (3) one to whom the prayer or the request is made
  • (८.४) In saying “ननु याचकस्य याञ्चायाम् याच्य-गुण-उत्कर्षः कुत्र उपयुज्यते इति आशङ्क्य” मल्लिनाथ seems to be deliberating on the doubt about the utility of higher status or quality of the one to whom request is being made.
  • (८.५) His deliberation seems to lead him to conclude दैवात् याञ्चा-भङ्गे अपि लाघव-दोष-अभावः एव उपयोगः i.e. in the event of failure of the request being fulfilled, one does not have the blemish of not having addressed the request to one of appropriately higher status or quality. This itself is some utility !
  • (८.६) This deliberation in (८.४) and (८.५) seems to be a commentary of मल्लिनाथ on the complete phrase याञ्चा मोघा वरम् अधिगुणे in the fourth line of the verse and not just on the word याञ्चा
  • (८.७) Mr. Aravind Kolhatkar comments on the word याञ्चा as follows –
I remember that when our revered guru, the late Dr T G Mainkar, taught us this verse in 1958, he had remarked that याञ्चा is a compromise resorted to by कालिदास so that the word could fit in the meter, the correct word being याचना ।  I think that this is a rare (or only?) occasion where कालिदास cannot think of a word which is appropriate to what he wants to say and which also fits the meter.
  • (८.८) From the above comment, it seems, that this word याञ्चा is self-composed by कालिदास ! Can one do that ? One latitude available to poets is निरन्कुशाः कवयः !!
९ अधिगुणे अधिकगुणे पुंसि विषये याञ्चा मोघा निष्फलापि वरम् ईषत्प्रियम् | दातुर्गुणाढ़यत्वात्प्रियत्वं याञ्चावैफल्यादीषत्प्रियमिति भावः ||
Here –
  • (९.१) मल्लिनाथ seems to interpret वरम् as ईषत् प्रियम् | Commonly वरम् means preferable. But ईषत् प्रियम् means “somewhat acceptable”
  • (९.२) दातुर्गुणाढ़यत्वात्प्रियत्वम् = दातुः गुण-आढ़यत्वात् प्रियत्वम् meaning प्रियत्वम् (= likeability) is by virtue of गुणाढ़यत्व (= higher status or quality) of दातुः (= of the one who has to grant the request)
  • (९.३) The word गुणाढ़य brings to mind the great story teller, who is famous in Sanskrit literature for his बृहत्कथासरित्सागर ।
  • (९.४) याञ्चावैफल्यादीषत्प्रियमिति = याञ्चा-वैफल्य-आदि-ईषत् प्रियम् इति | मल्लिनाथ seems to have become repetitive, rather obsessed to explain or endorse the phrase याञ्चा मोघा वरम् अधिगुणे |
१०  अधमे निर्गुणे याञ्चा लब्धकामापि सफलापि  वरम् | ईषत्प्रियमपि न भवतीत्यर्थः ||
  • (१०.१) Here again मल्लिनाथ alludes to his interpretation of वरम् as ईषत् प्रियम् |
  • (१०.२) So he interprets न वरम् also as –
ईषत्प्रियमपि न भवतीत्यर्थः = ईषत् प्रियम् अपि न भवति इति अर्थः ।
  • (१०.३) Dr. Avinash Sathaye commented -
I would not have translated the last line as advice on where to express your desire.
I would have translated -
It is better to have your request याञ्चा to a worthy person fail, than have it satisfied by a lowly evil person.
I take it to mean, the failure with a worthy person may indicate that the desire itself might be faulty, and on the other side, it might turn out to be a bad desire!
Thus, the comment is on the quality of desire being tested, not the quality of the one who is asking.
  • (१०.४) I wonder whether there is an error. Did Dr. Sathaye intend to write the phrase in the last line “not the quality of the one who is asking”  to read “not the quality of the one to whom one is asking”.
  • Dr. Sathaye has responded to the above doubt, explaining – You wondered about whether I meant what I wrote.
    I did.
I was referring to the testing taking place when the request is granted or rejected. When the request is made to a good person, it will fail only if it deserves to fail. When you make it to a bad person, it may even succeed for a bad reason!
Thus, when you ask a good person, you should be happy either way, when you ask a bad person, you should be suspicious either way!
११ “देवाद्वृते वरः श्रेष्ठे त्रिषु क्लीबं मनाक्प्रिये” (३-३-१७२) इत्यमरः | अर्थान्तरन्यासानुप्राणितः प्रेयोऽलङ्कारः |
तदुक्तं दण्डिना – “प्रेयः प्रियतराख्यानम्” (२-२-७५ काव्यादर्शे) इति |
  • (११.१) “सन्धि-विच्छेदान् कृत्वा समासानां पदानि च दर्शयित्वा” this is to be read as -
“देवात् वृते वरः श्रेष्ठे त्रिषु क्लीबं मनाक्-प्रिये” (३-३-१७२) इति अमरः |
अर्थ-अन्तर-न्यास-अनुप्राणितः प्रेयः अलङ्कारः | or अर्थान्तरन्यास-अनुप्राणितः प्रेयः अलङ्कारः |
      • अर्थान्तरन्यास is a type of figure of speech अलङ्कारः
      • प्रेयः अलङ्कारः is also a type of figure of speech
  • (११.२) By citing the quotation from अमरकोष, मल्लिनाथ seems to be concluding the figure of speech to be “प्रेय”-अलङ्कारः with the essence of “अर्थान्तरन्यास-अलङ्कारः |
  • The meaning “with the essence of” is suggested by the word “अनुप्राणितः” |
  • I do not understand how the quotation from अमरकोष endorses that the अलङ्कार (i.e. figure of speech) is प्रेय-अलङ्कार
  • Dr. Sathaye provides a good explanation – The Amara-quote is explaining the word वर. When it means a boon from Gods, it is masc. वरः.When it means “best”, it is in all three genders (त्रिषु) . When it means somewhat pleasant (there is the ईषत् प्रियम् again!), it is neuter (क्लीबे) {Note – मनाक्-प्रियम् = ईषत् प्रियम् }
  • With this explanation from Dr. Sathaye, out of the three sentences -
“देवाद्वृते वरः श्रेष्ठे त्रिषु क्लीबं मनाक्प्रिये” (३-३-१७२) इत्यमरः | अर्थान्तरन्यासानुप्राणितः प्रेयोऽलङ्कारः |तदुक्तं दण्डिना – “प्रेयः प्रियतराख्यानम्” (२-२-७५ काव्यादर्शे) इति |
The first one “देवाद्वृते वरः श्रेष्ठे त्रिषु क्लीबं मनाक्प्रिये” (३-३-१७२) इत्यमरः | details only the word वर. So, it is not a comment about अलङ्कार !
  • (११.३) मल्लिनाथ’s conclusion seems to be endorsed further by the quotation from काव्यादर्श by दण्डी |
१२  एतदाद्ये पादत्रये चतुर्थपादस्थेनार्थान्तरन्यासेनोपजीवितमिति सुव्यक्तमेतत् ।
  • (१२.१) “सन्धि-विच्छेदान् कृत्वा समासानां पदानि च दर्शयित्वा” this is to be read as -
एतद् आद्ये पाद-त्रये चतुर्थ-पादस्थेन अर्थान्तरन्यासेन उपजीवितं इति सुव्यक्तं एतत् ।
This seems to mean, “by the (clear) evidence of अर्थान्तरन्यास-अलङ्कार in the fourth line, it is revived in the first three lines as well.”
  • (१२.२) A figure of speech of the type “अर्थान्तरन्यास-अलङ्कारः” is defined as a figure of speech in which a general principle is adduced to support a particular instance or a particular instance is adduced to support a general proposition. It is an inference from particular to general and vice versa. To explain the definition, in Apte’s dictionary one finds following सुभाषितम् –
गुणवद्वस्तु-संसर्गात्  याति नीचोऽपि गौरवम् |
पुष्पमालानुषङ्गेण  सूत्रम् शिरसि धार्यते ||
It means, “In the company of a thing of higher quality, something of lower quality also gains higher status. The company of flowers in a garland, a thread also goes over head.”
  • (१२.३) In this श्लोक, the यक्ष justifies the instance of his request to the cloud त्वयि अर्थित्वम् by quoting the general principle याञ्चा मोघा वरम् अधिगुणे |
(१३) Study of the meter for every श्लोक has been dispensed by मल्लिनाथ by the mention अत्र काव्ये सर्वत्र मन्दाक्रान्ता-वृत्तम् in his टीका of the first verse itself.
Certainly this study of मल्लिनाथी टीका on the श्लोक becomes a specimen of his in-depth and comprehensive style of study.

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson No. 73
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य त्रि-सप्ततितमः (७३) पाठः |
In the supplement to lesson # 72 reference was made to the story of the Lion and the Mouse. Moral of that story is that friendship offered by anyone, howsoever small should not be disregarded. However, since friend in need is friend indeed, if we are in need, whom we should approach has been made into almost an edict in this श्लोक in मेघदूतम् by महाकवि कालिदास  –
जातम् वंशे भुवनविदिते पुष्करावर्तकानाम् |

४ टिप्पणयः |

४.१ To decipher the meter –
जातं वंशे भुवनविदिते पुष्करावर्तकानाम् | वर्णाः १७
(2-2 2)-(2 1-1)-(1-1-1)-(2 2-1)-(2-2-1)-2-2 इति मात्राः |
म, भ, न, त, त, ग, ग इति गणाः |
This is मन्दाक्रान्ता-वृत्तम् |
Its लक्षणपदम् is
मन्दाक्रान्तां बुधिरसनगैर्मो भनौ तौ गयुग्मम् |
It was mentioned earlier in Lesson # 37, entire मेघदूतम् is in this meter.
४.२ It needs to be noted that यक्ष prefaces his narration by an elaborate eulogy of the cloud, citing the fame of the cloud’s lineage and the cloud himself having appearance similar to that of Lord indra. This brings to mind another सुभाषितम् –
को न याति वशं लोके मुखे पिण्डेन पूरितः |
मृदंगो मुखलेपेन करोति मधुरध्वनिम् ||
४.३ In explaining the meanings of the word पुष्करावर्तकानाम् it has been explained at (२.४.२) and (२.४.३) that पुष्कर and आवर्तक are names of classes of clouds. Is this possibly an evidence that a scientific study of clouds was very much done and available even to poets ?
४.३.१ The etymology of पुष्कर suggests पुष्कर = पुष् + कर where पुष् = to mourish and कर = to do. Hence पुष्कर = one that gives nourishment. In Apte’s dictionary the meaning given says “class of clouds, which cause draught”. This meaning sounds contrary to the meaning deriving from the etymology.
४.३.२ Etymology of आवर्तक = आ + वृत् + क where आ + वृत् means to repeat. From the verb “वृत्” we also have वर्तुलम् = circle. So आवर्तक may be also meaning clouds which make repetitive circular motion i.e. a hurricane ! Since hurricanes are caused by low-pressure zones, आवर्तक could mean clouds suffering from low pressure zones.
४.३.३ In lesson # 3 we studied “शरदि न वर्षति गर्जति ….” That evidences study of clouds by seasons.
४.३.४ पुष्कर is also the name of a lake in Rajasthan, the desert state in India. One can appreciate the sustenance of life, which a lake in a desert provides. So the name of the lake justifies etymology of the word पुष्कर detailed in (४.३.१)
४.४ In 1958-59, although I was a student in the science faculty, I had opted for संस्कृत as an additional subject. मेघदूतम् and स्वप्नवासवदत्तम् were the prescribed textbooks for study. I still have with me the text-book of मेघदूतम्. Print-line of the book evidences that it was printed in 1935 !
In this book every श्लोक is detailed in 5 details – the text itself, मल्लिनाथी टीका, अन्वयार्थः, simple meaning in मराठी and Notes in मराठी.
The second detail “मल्लिनाथी टीका” is in Sanskrit. मल्लिनाथ was a critique. He became famous for composing his critical appreciations of a whole lot of Sanskrit literature. He set a format of sorts for his critical appreciation. I think it will be interesting to compile a supplement by detailing मल्लिनाथी टीका of this shloka.
४.५ Meaning of the second line can also be paraphrased as “You are the personification of Lord Indra Himself “. The meaning “personification” derives from the word “प्रकृतिपुरुष”.
४.५.१ The detailing of प्रकृतिपुरुष at (२.७) does not bring out the comprehensive import of the word. In श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता प्रकृति and पुरुष are mentioned as two distinct philosophical concepts –
प्रकृतिं पुरुषं चैव विद्ध्यनादी उभावपि |
विकारान्श्च गुणान्श्चैव विद्धि प्रकृतिसंभवान् ||१३-१९||
पुरुष is an ulterior concept and manifests itself by donning physical forms and their characteristics, which is प्रकृति. This is endorsed in –
पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान् गुणान् |
कारणम् गुणसंगोऽस्य सदसद्योनिजन्मसु ||१३-२१||
This detail in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता makes it challenging to understand what meaning कालिदास had in mind in using this word “प्रकृतिपुरुष” as a eulogy to the cloud
४.६ Two options of विग्रहः of the word कामरूपम् are detailed at (२.८).
४.६.१ The word कामरूपम् has other meanings and references also. One district in the state of Assam had this name कामरूप. Some interesting details can be read at http://www.kamrup.nic.in/histfr.htm
  • The name Assam itself has pure Sanskrit etymology. The original Sanskrit word is असम (= uneven). The state is a mountainous region and has practically no level surface.
४.७ The word “मघोनः” brings to mind the सुभाषितम् “… पाणिनिरेकसूत्रे श्वानम् युवानं मघवानमाह”, which was studied in Lesson # 57. मघवान् is not a word very commonly used. So, every instance of the use of such rarely-used word brings to mind the other instance also.
४.८ The moral is contained in the fourth line. That is what makes this shloka a सुभाषितम्.
४.८.१ To be convinced of the moral, it would be good to have concrete examples of what is not good with seeking requests to be granted by lowly persons and
४.८.२ example of why it is okay to make requests to highly placed persons, even if they may not be granted,

Supplement to Lesson No. 72

Supplement to Lesson No. 72
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य द्वि-सप्ततितमस्य (७२) पाठस्य परिशिष्टम् |
In this supplement we shall study the सुभाषितम् mentioned in Lesson # 72, in which a small-looking enemy is likened to an unextinguished ember.  –

२.१ न (= no, not) इति अव्ययम् |
२.२ उपेक्षितव्यः “उप + ईक्ष्” १ आ. (= to ignore, to neglect, to disregard) इति धातुः | तस्मात् “तव्य”-प्रत्ययेन विध्यर्थि विशेषणम् “उपेक्षितव्य” (= to be disregarded, worhty of disegarding) | अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि | तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च |
२.३ विद्वद्भिः “विद्” २ प. (= to know, to learn) इति धातुः | तस्मात् “वत्”-प्रत्ययेन विशेषणम् “विद्वत्” | अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि | तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च |
२.४ अल्पः “अल्प” (= little) इति विशेषणम् | अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि | तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च |
२.५ अपि (= also, even if) अव्ययम् |
(= to grow large) इति dhaatuH | tasmaat bhootakaalavaachakam visheShaNam “saMvRuddha” (= grown large) | atra पुल्लिङ्गि | तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
२.९ कुरुते “कृ” ८ उ. (= to do) इति धातुः | अत्र आत्मनेपदी | तस्य लट्-वर्तमानकाले उत्तम-पुरुषे एकवचनम् |
२.१० भस्मसात् ।
  • २.१०.१ भस्म + सात् |
  • २.१०.२ भस्म “भस्मन्” (= ashes) इति नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम | Actually “भस्मन्” may have an etymology भस्मन् = भस् + म + त् where भस् = shine म = no, without त्= so being. By that भस्मन् can have basic meaning as “being without shine”. That is how the ashes are !

Thinking that the enemy is small, a wise person should not ignore him by disregard.
३.२ अल्पः अपि वह्निः (यदि) संवृद्धः (भवति) वनम् भस्मसात् कुरुते | = A little fire, if it would spread, can burn to ashes a whole jungle.
४ टिप्पणयः |

४.१ To decipher the meter –
नोपेक्षितव्यो विद्वद्भिः | वर्णाः ८
2-2-1-2-2 2-2-2
शत्रुरल्पोऽप्यवज्ञया | वर्णाः ८
2-1-2-2 1-2-1-2
वह्निरल्पोऽपि  संवृद्धः | वर्णाः ८
2-1-2-2 1 2-2-2
कुरुते भस्मसाद्वनम् | वर्णाः ८
1-1-2 2-1-2-1-2
This is अनुष्टुभ्-छन्दः, with only one point of non-conformance that the fifth syllable in first quarter is of weightage 2, whereas it should be of weightage 1.
४.२ “Lion and the Mouse” is a famous story, which provides a positive message also that a friendship offered by anyone however small should not be disregarded.
  • An enemy however small should not be disregarded as per this सुभाषितम् ।
  • Friendship offered by anyone, howsoever small, should also not be disregarded ! मित्रं लघु अपि वरम् |
शुभमस्तु |
