संस्कृताध्ययनम् ।

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 50

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 50
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य पञ्चाशत्तमः (५०) पाठः ।
We have been combining well the study of the सुभाषितम् with study of the grammar of every word. This is how a study of a language should be, as has been well-stated in this सुभाषितम्  -
अव्याकरणमधीतं भिन्नद्रोण्या तरंगिणीतरणम् ।
भेषजमपथ्यसहितं त्रयमिदमकृतं वरं न कृतम् ॥
Meaning of this सुभाषितम् in हिन्दी is readily available at -
व्याकरण छोडकर किया हुआ अध्ययन, टूटी हुई नौका से नदी पार करना, और अयोग्य आहार के साथ लिया हुआ औषध – ये ऐसे करने के बजाय तो न करने हि बेहतर है ।
Anyway we shall derive meaning by ourselves too, following our usual method.
(= to analyse) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अन”-प्रत्ययेन “व्याकरण” (= grammar) इति नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम । तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • १.३ विना (= without) अव्ययम् ।
  • १.४ By the समासविग्रहः as व्याकरणम् न = अव्याकरणम् the meaning becomes improper, imperfect study
  • १.५ By the समासविग्रहः as व्याकरणेन विना = अव्याकरणम् the meaning becomes without analysis and understanding
  • १.६ By commonplace meaning of व्याकरणम् as grammar, अव्याकरणम् would mean without study of grammar.
२ अधीतम् “अधि + इ” २ उ. (= to get command of, to learn) इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणि-भूतकालवाचकम् विशेषणम् “अधीत” (= studied, learnt) । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
३ भिन्न-द्रोण्या ।
  • ३.१ भिन्ना द्रोणी = भिन्नद्रोणी । कर्मधारयः ।
  • ३.२ भिन्ना “भिद्” ७ उ. (= to break) इति धातुः ।
  • ४.२ तरंगिण्याम् तरंगाः अस्याम् सन्ति इति “तरंग + अनी” एवं स्त्रीलिङ्गि नाम “तरंगिणी” (= one, which has waves, hence, a lake, a large water-body) । तस्य सप्तमी विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ४.३ तरणम् “तृ” १ उ. (= to float, to swim, to wade across) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अ”-प्रत्ययेन नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम “तरण” (= wading across) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
५ भेषजम् “भेष्” १ उ. (= to frighten) इति धातुः ।
  • ६.३ पथ्यम् “पथ्” १ प. (= to go, to move, to walk along, to follow) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “य”-प्रत्ययेन विध्यर्थि विशेषणम् नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम च “पथ्य” (= what should be followed, prescription) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ६.४ सहितम् “स + धा” ३ उ. (= to be with) इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणि-भूतकालवाचकम् विशेषणम् “सहित” (= with) । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ६.५ अपथ्यसहितम् = not following the prescription
७ त्रयम् “त्रीणि अस्मिन्” इति विशेषणम् “त्रय” (= triad, set of three) । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
८ इदम् (= this) इति सर्वनाम । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।

३ अन्वयाः अनुवादाः च ।
  • अ-व्याकरणम् अधीतम् = Whatever is studied without grammar (analysis)
  • भिन्न-द्रोण्या तरंगिणी-तरणम् = wading across a lake in a leaky boat
  • भेषजम् अ-पथ्य-सहितम् = taking medicine not following the prescription
  • इदम् त्रयम् अकृतम् वरम् = better that this triad is not done
  • कृतम् न (वरम्) = doing them is not preferable
Overall meaning -
Study done without proper understanding, wading across a lake in a leaky boat and taking medicine not following the prescription (especially about diet and exercises) these three are better not done than done.
2 The phrase अकृतम् वरम् न कृतम् is similar to a phrase किमेतत् सुकृतं कृतम् we had in Lesson 33 -
आयुषः खण्ड्मादाय रविरस्तमयं गतः ।
अहन्यहनि बोद्धव्यं किमेतत् सुकृतं कृतम् ॥
3 To understand the meaning of this we have to presume वरम् as implicit with कृतम् न Hence कृतम् न (वरम्) । Sanskrit poetry often has such implicits to be presumed. There is a poetic charm in this also, right ? “A hint is enough for a smart person” is a proverb in Hindi !
4 There is no verb. The function of the verb is served by the past passive participles अकृतम् and न कृतम् । Since participles are basically derived from verbs, using them to serve the function of the verb is very common in Sanskrit. Often the implicit verb is अस्ति or भवति ।
5 The word व्याकरणम् is commonly taken to mean “grammar”. But if we look at its etymology, note that the word is derived from the verb “वि + आ + कृ” It can be appreciated that the word has a broader meaning of “study done with proper analysis and understanding”. So, व्याकरणम् is a method of study for any subject, not just grammar. A language of course should be studied by understanding its grammar as well. That is what I have been trying to present.
6 The word अधीतम् is also interesting. See its etymology also.
  • 6.1 अधीतम् “अधि + इ” २ उ. (= to get command of, to learn) इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणि-भूतकालवाचकम् विशेषणम् “अधीत” (= studied, learnt) ।
  • 6.2 The word अध्यायः also has etymology from this verb “अधि + इ” २ उ. (= to get command of, to learn) It has one more prefix “अधि + आ + इ” Every chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता is called as अध्यायः Every chapter is for deep study and not just for rote-learning. That is the recommendation व्यासमुनि implied in calling every chapter as अध्यायः ।
  • 6.3 The prefixes अधि and आ have very encompassing and forceful meaning अधि implies अधिकार command  आ implies expanse
  • 6.4 In Lesson # 17, we studied तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया । The words व्याकरणम् and अधीतम् here together encompass प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया । It all has to be done with a passion as was mentioned in the two verses in Lesson # 41 यद्येन क्रियते किञ्चित् येन येन यदा यदा
  • 6.5 For Sanskrit grammarians grammar is not a dry subject. It is a subject of very analytical scientific study. Only by such deep passionate study पाणिनी composed his monumental अष्टाध्यायी with 3,983 सूत्राणि getting in their ambit the whole of Sanskrit grammar !!
7 We usually have “DOs and DON’Ts” in codes of conduct. Every सुभाषितम् has recommendation of some “DOs and DON’Ts” In this सुभाषितम् we have the DON’Ts. The DOs are of course implicit.
  • 7.1 In saying अव्याकरणम् अधीतम् अकृतम् वरम् the implied message is अधीतम् सव्याकरणम् कर्तव्यम् All study should be done with analysis and understanding so as to get command over the subject.
  • 7.2 In saying अपथ्यसहितम् भेषजम् अकृतम् वरम् the implied message is भेषजम् पथ्यसहितम् कर्तव्यम्
8 पथ्य is also an interesting word, is it not ? To put it simply पथ्य means “way to go” ! This way, this word पथ्य also has a vast compass. A synonym of पथ्य is विधानम् as is mentioned in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता “ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तम् कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि (१६-२४)” There would be a science शास्त्रम् and technique, specified procedure विधानम् for doing any job properly.

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 49

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 49
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य नवचत्वारिंशः (४९) पाठः ।
We have been discussing virtues and good nature. This is also in the same vein -
(= to indulge in improper, untoward, incongruous behaviour) इति धातुः ।
(= to indulge in excessive, oppressive, behaviour) इति धातुः ।
(= to think) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अ”-प्रत्ययेन पुल्लिङ्गि नाम “विचार” (= thought) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ५.३ आचार “आ + चर्” १ उ. प्रायः प. (= to behave) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अ”-प्रत्ययेन पुल्लिङ्गि नाम “आचार” (= behaviour, conduct) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ५.४ विचाराचारयोः “विचाराचार” इति सामासिकम् पुल्लिङ्गि नाम । तस्य षष्ठी विभक्तिः द्विवचनम् च ।
६ योगः “युज्” ७ उ. (= to join) इति धातुः । तस्मात् पुल्लिङ्गि नाम “योग” (= joint action) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
७ सः “तत्” इति सर्वनाम । अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि (= he) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
८ सदाचारः ।
  • ८.१ सत् आचारः = सदाचारः । कर्मधारयः ।
  • ८.२ सदाचारः “सदाचार” (= good conduct) इति पुल्लिङ्गि सामान्यनाम । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
९ उच्यते “वच्” २ प. (= to speak, to call) इति धातुः । तस्य कर्मणि-प्रयोगे लट्-वर्तमाने तृतीय-पुरुषे एकवचनम् ।
४ अन्वयाः अनुवादाः च ।
अनाचारेण मालिन्यं (भवति) । = Improper incongruous conduct brings blemish
अत्याचारेण मूर्खता (भवति) । = Excessive, oppressive behaviour becomes foolishness
(यः) विचाराचारयोः योगः सः सदाचारः उच्यते । = Proper combination of thought and conduct is called as good conduct.
५ टिप्पणयः ।
१ अत्र अनुष्टुभ् छन्दः ।
2 Here we have उपसर्गाः  अन् अति वि आ and सत् prefixed to the verb चर् and we have words of very different meanings. That reminds of the सुभाषितम् studied in Lesson # 21. उपसर्गेण धात्वर्थो बलादन्यत्र नीयते । प्रहाराहारसंहारविहारपरिहारवत् ॥
3 Meaning of the second line “Proper combination of thought and conduct is called as good conduct” presumes that the “proper” combination of thought and conduct is when thought is good and conduct is also good. Only then the conduct is a good conduct. Rather conduct (or action) should be preceded by good thinking. The proverb “Think twice before you act” exactly underlines precedence of thinking before action.
4 Also, antonym of सदाचारः is actually दुराचारः । We can say that अनाचार: and अत्याचार: make detailing of दुराचारः ।
5 It seems अनाचारेण and अत्याचारेण have to be interchanged.
  • 5.1 Terrorists, for example indulge in excessive behaviour. That is not foolishness. Terrorist minds  are not treated in mental hospitals. They of course are not liked in the society. Theirs becomes a blemished character. What they get is मालिन्यम् |
  • 5.2 Also it is untoward, improper, incongruous behaviour is called as foolish behaviour मूर्खता and is often treated in mental hospitals.
  • 5.3 The सुभाषितम् should hence be rather reworded as -
अत्याचारेण मालिन्यं अनाचारेण मूर्खता ।
विचाराचारयोर्योगः स सदाचार उच्यते ॥
  • 5.4 It also seems that for somewhat of a musical ear, the second line may sound better by interchanging स and सदाचार | Maybe, it should rather be
अत्याचारेण मालिन्यं अनाचारेण मूर्खता ।
विचाराचारयोर्योगः सदाचारः स उच्यते ॥
  • 5.5 This way, it rhymes well with following श्लोकः in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता -
कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन् ।
इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते ॥ ३-६॥
  • 5.6 In addition to दुराचार (अनाचार, अत्याचार) and सदाचार in this सुभाषितम् now by this श्लोकः in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता we also have मिथ्याचार !!
  • 5.7 Uniformity in thought, word and deed is also important. If not, it becomes मिथ्याचार | There is a सुभाषितम् which does mention मनसि वचसि काये साधूनामेकरूपता । And there is a proverb in Hindi with quite some sarcasm in it मुँहमें राम, बगलमें छुरी meaning “Uttering name of राम by mouth and carrying a knife in the belt.”
6 Essence of the second line is in the word सदाचार, rather in the prefix सत् This word सत् is part of a महावाक्यम् “ॐ तत् सत्”
In श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता this  महावाक्यम् is detailed across 5 verses (# 23 to 27) in the seventeenth chapter. Out of these five verses, सत् itself is explained in two verses.
सद्भावे साधुभावे च सदित्येतत्प्रयुज्यते ।
प्रशस्ते कर्मणि तथा सच्छब्दः पार्थ युज्यते ॥ १७-२६ ॥
यज्ञे तपसि दाने च स्थितिः सदिति उच्यते ।
कर्म चैव तदर्थीयम् सदित्येवाभिधीयते ॥ १७-२७ ॥
7 We have lot to study further in lessons ahead.
शुभमस्तु

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 48

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 48
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य अष्ट्चत्वारिंशः (४८) पाठः ।
Having discussed करे श्लाघ्यस्त्यागः and कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः in the previous lesson, this सुभाषितम् also advises what more good things can be done by one’s hands -
(= to say respects) इति धातुः । तस्य प्रयोजकः “अभि + वाद्” । तस्मात् नपुसंकलिङ्गि नाम “अभिवादन” । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।

  • ३.३ उपसेवी “उप + सेव्” १ आ. (= to serve) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “इन्”-प्रत्ययेन विशेषणम् “उपसेविन्” (= one, who does service) । अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
  • ३.४ वृद्धोपसेविनः “वृद्धोपसेविन्” (= one, who does service of the aged) इति सामासिकम् विशेषणम् । अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि । तस्य षष्ठी विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
४ चत्वारि “चतुर्” अथवा “चतुस्” (= four) इति संख्यावाचकम् विशेषणम् । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
५ तस्य “तत्”इति सर्वनाम । अत्र पुल्लिङ्गि (= he) । तस्य षष्ठी विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
६ वर्धन्ते वृध् १ आ. (= to enhance) इति धातुः । तस्य लट्-वर्तमाने तृतीय-पुरुषे बहुवचनम् च ।

नित्यं अभिवादन-शीलस्य वृद्ध-उपसेविनः तस्य आयुः विद्या यशः बलम्  (एतानि) चत्वारि वर्धन्ते ।
= (यः) नित्यं अभिवादनशीलः वृद्धोपसेवी च, तस्य आयुः विद्या यशः बलम्  (एतानि) चत्वारि वर्धन्ते ।
= He who is always respectful and does service to elders, he would have enhancement of life, knowledge, success and strength.
५ टिप्पणयः ।
1 There are four parts, each of 8 syllables. This is अनुष्टुभ् छन्दः । There are many variants of this अनुष्टुभ् छन्दः । However in the most common pattern, the structure is as follows.
अस्य लक्षणम् – श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयम् । सर्वत्र लघुपञ्चमम् । द्विचतुःपादयोर्र्‍हस्वम् । सप्तमं दीर्घमन्यथा ॥
Apart from there being 8 syllables in each quarter,
श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयम् = sixth syllable is always with weightage 2 (गुरु)
सर्वत्र लघुपञ्चमम् = fifth syllable is always with weightage 1 (लघु)
द्विचतुःपादयोर्र्‍हस्वम् । सप्तमं दीर्घमन्यथा = seventh syllable is
with weightage 1 = ‌‍र्‍हस्वम् in second and fourth and
with weightage 2 (दीर्घम्) in first and third
2 The phrase नित्यं अभिवादन-शीलस्य वृद्ध-उपसेविनः तस्य is somewhat of idiomatic construction. As has been detailed in अन्वयाः, it has to be understood to be (यः) नित्यं अभिवादनशीलः वृद्धोपसेवी च, तस्य |
3 Traditional way of saying and doing respects अभिवादन is to greet with folded hands. This is also called as नमस्कार “नमः कार्यते एवम् इति नमस्कारः” Literally नमः means bending, bowing, bowing at somebody’s feet, doing respects.
On the goodness of नमस्कार there is a beautiful 17th century verse in Marathi by Saint Ramdas (Devanagari: रामदास, Rāmdās) (1606–1682) a prominent Marathi saint and poet greatly respected in Maharashtra, India. I would better quote that verse -
नमस्कारे लीनता घडे = नमस्कार inculcates modesty
नमस्कारे विकल्प मोडे = नमस्कार banishes misunderstandings and immaturities
नमस्कारे सख्य जडे = नमस्कार sets up friendship
नाना सत्त्वाग्राही = across the living world
नमस्कारे दोष जाती = नमस्कार removes faults and short-comings
नमस्कारे अन्याय क्षमती = नमस्कार resolves injustices
नमस्कारे मोडली जडती = नमस्कार rejoins the broken relationships
समाधाने = with congeniality
नमस्कारे कृपा उचंबळे = नमस्कार arouses compassion and grace
नमस्कारे प्रसन्नता प्रबळे = नमस्कार strengthens satisfaction
नमस्कारे गुरुदेव भोळे = by नमस्कार the precepts bestow
साधकांवरी = the disciple
नमस्कारास वेचावे न लगे = One need not spend anything for नमस्कार
नमस्कारास कष्टावे न लगे = One need not exert anyway for doing नमस्कार
नमस्कारास कांहिच न लगे = नमस्कार does not need anything really
उपकरण सामग्री = no tools, no implements, no materials
याकारणें नमस्कारापरतें = Hence better than नमस्कार
आणिक नाही अनुसरतें = there is nothing
नमस्कारे प्राणियांतें = By नमस्कार men
सद्-बुद्धि लाभे = will have right motivations
साधकभावें नमस्कार घाली = Do नमस्कार as a disciple
त्याची चिंता गुरूस लागली = then the responsibility of taking good care becomes responsibility of the precept
सुगमपंथें नेऊन घाली = He will certainly lead to the right path
जेथील तेथें = whichever is appropriate
All this wholesome meaning is implicit in the word अभिवादन of this सुभाषितम् | So अभिवादन should become a part of one’s nature. That is the significance of the word शील !
4 वृद्ध = elder is also an interesting word to study. In Indian culture all elders are to be respected. Importantly however, elderliness is not by age alone. When one attains elderliness by age, one becomes वयोवृद्ध, by knowledge ज्ञानवृद्ध by special aptitudes and faculties achieved by hard and focused study and practice तपोवृद्ध । Elderliness in short is respectability. One becomes respectable also by philanthropy दानम्
These – ज्ञानवृद्धता, तपोवृद्धता, दानशीलता are well-summarized in अष्टादशाध्याये श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतायाम् -
यज्ञो दानम् तपश्चैव पावनानि मनीषिणाम् (१८-५)
Here यज्ञ encompasses all types of यज्ञ-s which have been earlier detailed in
द्रव्ययज्ञास्तपोयज्ञा योगयज्ञास्तथापरे ।
स्वाध्याय-ज्ञानयज्ञाश्च यतयः संशितव्रताः ॥ ४-२८ ॥
Most importantly, all these are to be practised not at all with the objective of gaining respectability. That would happen, automatically. For oneself, one should practise these as inherent nature. That is why the word नित्यम् in this सुभाषितम् |
All across श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, the advice always is not to have in mind aspirations and expectations to be gained, in cultivating any practice or in doing any कर्म |

2 Suggestion of Mr. Ujjwal LAmichhane to study this सुभाषितम् has somehow coincided with the study of “ऐश्वर्यस्य विभूषणम् …” in the previous lesson. Is it some divine coincidence ?
2.1 There we had a listing of nine virtues. Here we have six virtues – philanthropy, affection and respects for the precept, truthful speech, bravery, clean character i.e. chastity, focused undertaking i.e. penance.
2.2 There the virtues were called as विभूषणम् | Here they are called as श्लाघ्य and मण्डनम् |
2.3 There virtues became decoration for a faculty. Here virtues become decorations of different organs.
3 Here we have six virtues adorning the whole body including the heart. We had exactly six virtues also in
उद्यमः साहसं धैर्यम् बुद्धिः शक्तिः पराक्रमः ।
षडेते यत्र वर्तन्ते तत्र देवः सहाय्यकृत् ॥
4 करे श्लाघ्यस्त्यागः brings to mind a prayer to be said immediately after getting up. The prayer is
कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः करमध्ये च सरस्वती ।
करमूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥
In this prayer three parts of the palms are identified with three deities. Is there a logic behind which deity at which part of the palm ? It seems, there is !
  • लक्ष्मीः is the goddess of wealth. She is assigned the position at tips of fingers. Whatever one would hve at the tips of fingers would be more readily given away. That is how it should be for wealth to be acquired. It should be given away ! Philanthropy adorns the hands !
  • Whatever is held at करमध्ये has quite some firmness in the hold.  सरस्वती is the deity of knowledge. It should better be held firmly. So करमध्ये च सरस्वती !
  • गोविन्दः is कृष्णः He reared cows in his childhood. Hence his name गोविन्दः ! Rearing cows denotes compassion and affection for the animal world. It is best done with patting. Patting is best done by करमूल | So करमूले तु गोविन्दः connotes compassion for the animal world, rather compassion even for the animal world, in turn compassion for all the living !
  • प्रभाते करदर्शनम् Having focused on the three parts of the hands meditating on the three deities in this manner, praying that urge for philanthropy, knowledge and compassion be cultivated over the day, take a wholesome look at both the hands, fold them together in prayer, rub them together and run the warmth all over the face. This will certainly arouse freshness ! That becomes good waking up, awakening !
5 सनातन धर्म has been criticised for its multiple-deity concept ! Look at the positive significance that is inbuilt in the concept. 330 million deities ! Association of a concept of deity with anything cultivates veneration, devotion, affection.
6 I am fascinated by the comprehensiveness and the rhythmic beat and capability to create a pious environment so ingrained in the शान्ति-मन्त्रः
The repetitions also have the power to build up the environment – environment within and environment around ! That is what makes a मन्त्रः a मन्त्रः !
शुभमस्तु ।

८ धर्मस्य (विभूषणम्) निर्व्याजता (अस्ति) । = Religiousness shines by non-deceit, non-pretence i.e., genuine-ness.
९ सर्वेषाम् अपि सर्व-कारणम् इदम् = The consummate reason why all these shine is this -
१० शीलम् परम् भूषणम् (अस्ति) । = Chastity is the ultimate ornament. Or personality shines by chastity
५ टिप्पणयः ।
1 अत्र “शार्दूलविक्रीडितम्” छन्दः ।
2 Here we have mention of eight faculties, which people may have – ऐश्वर्य (splendour, overlordship) शौर्य (bravery), ज्ञानम् (knowledge, intelligence), श्रुतिः (high learning), वित्तम् (wealth), तपः (penance) बलम् (strength) धर्मः (religiousness). Each of these faculties has some positiveness in them. Yet, they have the fallibility, that they may be wrongly used or wrongly demonstrated, wrongly exhibited.
3 By saying that penance shines by freedom from anger, and by speaking that way, in respect of all the eight faculties, the सुभाषितम् really cautions against their wrong usage. Wrong usage, wrong “deliverance” (to use a term from modern management parlance) will be disastrous.
4 In the third chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता when saying श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः” श्रीकृष्ण-भगवान् also cautions परधर्मो भयावहः । In the same manner each of the above statements can be supplemented by the implicit caution against wrong deliverance. So, we can say -
  • 4.1 Sovereignty or overlordship shines by gentlemanship, nobility, not by arrogance and oppression
  • 4.2 Bravery shines by Control of speech not by self-praise or bragging
  • 4.3 Intelligence shines by helping peace prevail, by clarifying doubts, not by raising arguments
वादाः arguments are said to be of two types -
वादे वादे जायते तत्त्वबोधः Such arguments are of course “shining” arguments :-)
However if वादे वादे जायते कण्ठशोषः :- (
In tenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता श्रीकृष्ण-भगवान् says “वादः प्रवदतामहम्” Of course प्रवदताम् वादः results in तत्त्वबोधः Entire श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता is such a संवादः which made सञ्जयः overwhelmed to have listened to it all ” इत्यहं वासुदेवस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः । संवादमिममश्रौषमद्भूतम् रोमहर्षणम् ॥…”
So many म-काराः in संवादमिममश्रौषमद्भूतम् रोमहर्षणम् :-)
  • 4.4 The learned-ness shines by modesty not by becoming egotic. Even Newton said, “My knowledge is like a grain of sand on a vast beach” ! “Shallow water makes much noise :-’,
  • 4.5 Wealth shines by giving to deserving, not by squandering and showing off
  • 4.6 Penance shines by freedom from anger not by explicating curses  दुर्वास-ऋषिः is more caricatured for his anger. In contrast how beautifully कण्व-मुनिः said about himself as संयमधनान् अस्मान् in his message to राजा दुष्यन्तः ।
  • 4.7 Strength shines by forgiveness, not by aggressiveness and oppression. One may wonder how it would be if free-style wrestlers go bullying around all the time :- (
  • 4.8 Religiousness shines by non-deceit, non-pretence i.e. by genuine-ness, by transparency, not by having ulterior motives or by being vicious and scheming. The overall message of श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता is not to shirk any कर्म but to do it with no expectations or aspirations.
5 We have a list of eight positive faculties and eight corresponding virtues which will make the positive faculties shine. सुजनता वाक्-संयमः उपशमः विनयः पात्रे व्ययः अक्रोधः क्षमा निर्व्याजता To top them all, we have the ninth one – शीलम्
  • Three opening verses in the sixteenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता enlist as many 25 virtues !
  • How virtuous the most virtuous can be ? When I started exploring such exhaustive list of virtues, I came across lists also
  • in verses 7 to 11 in the thirteenth chapter and also
  • in verses 42, 43, 44 in the eighteenth chapter.
  • Some virtues do repeat. So, I made a tabulation and derived an exhaustive list to eliminate the repetitions. If I remember it right, it became a list of 42 virtues !! Anyone would like to redo that ?
  • In the sixteenth chapter the list of virtues is mentioned as दैवी सम्पत् meaning wealth. This corresponds so beautifully with कण्व-मुनिः calling it as धनम् !
6 The motto of the school, where I studied was “शीलम् परम् भूषणम्” I felt naturally excited, when I first came across this सुभाषितम् and got to know from where the motto was chosen and adopted ! Schools do have the noble objective of grooming positive personality traits in the students. The most important trait to be cultivated should be chastity, right ? शीलम् परम् भूषणम् |
7 How wonderful a world it would be, if everybody is chaste

2 “परिग्रहीतुः” is a word which merits some discussion.
  • Since in the tradition of sanAtana dharma there is the ritual that husband and wife being married have to do rounds around a sacred fire, parigrahItRu is the person who accepts the girl as his wife after going around, which is the meaning of the prefix “pari”. In turn “parigrahItRu” means the husband.
  • The word parigrahaH is also quoted in the dollowing verses in shreemad-bhagavad-geetaa.
    निराशीर्यतचित्तात्मा त्यक्तसर्वपरिग्रहः | शारीरं केवलं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्नोति किल्बिषम् ॥ ४-२१ ॥
    अहंकारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं परिग्रहम् । विमुच्य निर्ममः शान्तो ब्रह्मभूयाय कल्पते ॥ १८-५३ ॥
At both these places परिग्रहः means yearning for pleasures.
  • Interestingly, the word परिग्रहीतुः is in षष्ठी विभक्तिः | Actually Shakuntalaa is being sent “to” her husband Dushyanta. So dwiteeyaa vobhaktiH would also have been appropriate, rather grammatically more correct. But since she is being sent to her husband the parigrahItRu who is going to be the “right”-ful master, his ownership -ownership of responsibility towards ShakuntalA – is indicated by the sixth case  षष्ठी विभक्तिः since अधिकरणे षष्ठी विभक्तिः Poetic mind is manifest even in using षष्ठी विभक्तिः !!
3 About the word “परकीय”
  • Dr. K.C. Varadachari in his article “KALIDASA AND MYSTICISM AND SRI AUROBINDO” at CLICK HERE says this -
  • “…..In तन्त्र-साधना of the सहजीय we have reference to the परकीय – which is said to be better than स्वकीय.  Much extraordinary and indeed wrong conclusions have been drawn.  परकीय means that, one feels oneself as belonging to God or the Divine, as contrasted with the स्वकीय as belonging to oneself. In an illuminating way कालिदास himself uses this word परकीय as belonging to another or the other:…”
  • Then this verse अर्थो हि कन्या…” is quoted. Dr. VaradAchAree further adds -
  • A girl belongs to her husband (another) and has to be restored to her rightful Lord even like the soul that has to be restored to the supreme.  This simile is very important for, as I had elsewhere suggested, the higher level is shown to illumine the lower level on the basis of similarity.  This is true उपमान or instrument of true knowledge, the उपमेय is the ordinary restoration of the girl to the lawful husband who indeed in धर्म शास्त्र-s is विष्णू or his अंश or
symbolises Him, and obviously every girl is a श्री or लक्ष्मी or her अंश.
4 This verse is an advice by कण्व-मुनि to all parents, guardians and relatives of the bride  on how their thinking would be and  should be when sending a girl to her husband’s household.
5 The four famous verses are not in consecutive order. Their respective verse number was mentioned in previous lessons also , this one being verse # 21.
6 To recapitulate, the themes of four verses dwelt upon are -
  • 6.1 verse # 5 covered the feelings which overwhelm mind of bride’s father when sending her to her husband’s place
  • 6.2 Verse # 16 covered message of the brides elderly relative to the reponsible person(s) in husband’s household, in this instance, the King himself
  • 6.3 verse # 17 advice to the bride
  • 6.4 verse # 21 advice to parents, guardians and responsible relatives of the girl about the line of thinking to be borne in mind, not only when sending her to her husband’s place, but also when grooming her from childhood.
7 The four “shloka”s together श्लोकचतुष्टयम् make a grand summary of the cultural concepts and eternal wisdom of grooming a girl child and sending her to her husband’s place. That is what makes this श्लोकचतुष्टयम् the “famous four” !

५ टिप्पणयः ।
1 अत्र शार्दूलविक्रीडितम् छन्दः ।
2 “प्रतीपं गमः मा स्म” is a special construction in Sanskrit.  We find a similar phrase in the third shloka of second chapter of श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता -
क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्वैय्युपपद्यते ।
क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परंतप ॥ २-३ ॥
3 This verse is an advice by कण्व-मुनि to शकुन्तला on how she should conduct herself in husband’s household.
4 The message is of course what every father of a bride would like to say to his daughter.
5 Can there be any better advice ?
6 Maybe, even long-married ladies should remind and re-remind themselves by re-reading this shloka every now and then and should groom their daughters also accordingly. Advices like these make culture संस्कृति to be passed on from generation to generation. No doubt this shloka is among the famous four.

You should accord due consideration to (1) we are people, who highly regard self-restraint as wealth (2)  you belong to an exalted family (3) she became infatuated with you without knowledge and approval of her relatives.
You should (hence) see that this (ShakuntalA) gets equal respect as is accorded to (your) other queens)
Whatever further will happen, will be as per fate.
That is not to be said by relatives of the bride.
५ टिप्पणयः ।
१ अत्र शार्दूलविक्रीडितम् छन्दः ।
2 This verse is a message by कण्व-मुनि addressed to King दुष्यन्त. कण्व-मुनि told the message to shArngarava, who was to escort शकुन्तला to दुष्यन्त’s courts.
3 The message is almost what father of a bride would like to say to his daughter’s in-laws.
4 कण्व-मुनि as foster father of शकुन्तला is in the embarassing situation that शकुन्तला was pregnant and दुष्यन्त had not kept his promise to send for her. All this had happened wthout his knowledge. Yet by his message he wanted to ensure that शकुन्तला gets the respect deserving for a queen.
5 कण्व-मुनि was also well aware that being a muni, he did not possess resources to provide for a congenial initial acquaintance for the girl in a new strange household, that too, in this case, in a king’s palace. That must have been the basic concept of dowry. One feels it weird, how a good basic concept has degenerated into an atrocious dowry-system !
6 कण्व-मुनि calling self-restraint ‘sanyama’ as wealth ‘dhana’, has also been interpreted to mean that as a muni, कण्व-मुनि had the powers to curse दुष्यन्त for having indulged into an act without his knowledge or approval The act indulged into was serious enough, because शकुन्तला had become pregnant. The situation was furthermore serious, because दुष्यन्त had not kept his promise. Yet कण्व-मुनि was exercising restraint.
7 Speaking of self-restraint by a person with powers, another subhAShitam comes to mind, which has phrases “kShamA balavatAm” meaning, to pardon is adornment for the strong and “shauryasya vAk-sanyamo” meaning restraint of speech is adornment for the brave and strong. We shall study that in due course.
8 कण्व-मुनि saying “Whatever further will happen will be by fate”, has been interpreted to mean that being a muni, कण्व-मुनि could foresee the future. But he did not want to speak about it. He made that into a general statement that, relatives of the bride should not worry themselves with anxieties of the future and should not speak about it all.
9 The very first word of the verse has कण्व-मुनि referring to himself in plural and the mention in the first line is of wealth. The whole strategy seems to be that कण्व-मुनि wanted king दुष्यन्त to receive the message with due respects. Mention of self-restraint as wealth was also in line with that strategy. If शकुन्तला had suffered a dent to her virginity, दुष्यन्त was also equally responsible for it.
10 Is there really the need to discuss why this verse is famous and popular ? It has strategy, poise, self-respect, self-restraint, awareness of social customs, consciousness of one’s strengths and weaknesses (SWOT analysis ?) including T of SWOT, the threats what कण्व-मुनि could foresee ! It has all the sentiments and sensibilities of a father figure, sending his daughter to her husband’s place.
शुभमस्तु ।

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 42

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 42
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य द्विचत्वारिंशः (४२) पाठः ।
In the टिप्पणयः in previous lesson, mention was made of four shlokaaH श्लोकचतुष्टयम् in Act 4 चतुर्थोऽङ्कः in अभिज्ञानशाकुंतलम् by महाकविः कालिदासः | Very promptly Mr. Vasu Shrinivasan responded saying, “शाकुन्तलस्य श्लोकचतुष्टयम् च् पठितुं प्रतीक्षां करोमि |”.  Actually, I too have not read the श्लोकचतुष्टयम् । in good detail. So, suggestion of Mr. Vasu Shrinivasan proved as a good motivation to read and study them. Before going into the study of the shlokaH, it is necessary to know the background.
Briefly the story of the play is that शकुन्तला the heroine of the play was born of विश्वामित्रऋषिः and मेनका the celestial beauty (अप्सरा) Disowned by both of them the child was being looked after by a pair of birds शकुन्तपक्षिद्वयेन | कण्वमुनिः (alias काश्यपः) happened to notice the child. He brought the baby to his आश्रम and brought her up.
Once राजा दुष्यन्तः in his gaming sojourn, reached आश्रम of कण्वमुनि and was charmed by the beauty of शकुन्तला | He indulged in गान्धर्व-विवाहः with शकुन्तला  गान्धर्व-विवाहः is a marriage by a custom permissible to Gandharvas, the celestial beings. राजा दुष्यन्तः promised to send for her. But he faltered in his promise. शकुन्तला became pregnant and had to be sent to दुष्यन्त This shlokaH expresses the distrot condition of कण्वमुनि due to going away of शकुन्तला
Here is the shlokaH -

५ टिप्पणयः ।
1 Phrases here remind of the conditions experienced by Arjuna on the battlefield. Here are comparative phrases from श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता
  • स्तम्भित-बाष्प-वृत्ति-कलुषः कण्ठः See मुखं च परिशुष्यति (१-२९)
  • उत्कण्ठया हृदयं संस्पृष्टम् See कृपया परयाविष्टो विषीदन् (१-२७)
  • मम वैक्लव्यम् See भ्रमतीव च मे मनः (१-३०) also भयेन च प्रव्यथितम् मनो मे (११-४५)
2 Ashramas in those days, although away from inhabited communities were almost like families. Shakuntala had her friends. KaNva-muni deputed his disciples शार्ङ्गरव and to escort Shakuntala to DuShyanta’s court. There was an elderly lady Gautamee, who took motherly care of all residents of the Ashrama. Because of such environment in the Ashrama, it becomes appropriate for KaNva-muni to say that even though he was अरण्यौकस् with Shakuntala’s leaving, he was feeling the pangs of separation.
3 It is a famous shlokaH, primarily because it is so sentimentally replete. It is famous also because of KaNva-muni expressing empathy with all house-holders. This shloka will make all parents and guardians reminisce the pangs and anxieties, they experienced, when daughters bid good-bye to go to their husband’s household.
4 The phrase कथं न पीड्यन्ते ? has the combination of negation and interrogation. The combination makes it into a firm, positive statement पीड्यन्ते एव ।
5 “Family” is a very important social institution. If divorces are rampant in a society, does it become a good society with all the goodness of sensibilities of family bonds ?

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 41

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 41
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य एक-चत्वारिंशः (४१) पाठः ।
We have been studying verses from many resources – श्रीरामरक्षास्तोत्रम् श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता भर्तृहरी-त्रिशतकम् चाणक्यनीतिः मेघदूतम् मालविकाग्निमित्रम् etc.
Now I have the following suggestion from Mr. Avinash Sathaye -
Mr. Avinash Sathaye wrote:
I am enclosing a couple of verses from योगवासिष्ठ as candidates for your analysis. These are attributed to सरस्वती during discussions of योगाभ्यास with her devotee लीला .
यद्येन क्रियते किंचिद्येन येन यदा यदा ।
विनाभ्यासेन तन्नेह सिद्धिमेति कदाचन ।।३.२२.२३॥
तच्चिन्तनं तत्कथनम् अन्योन्यं तत्प्रबोधनम् ।
एतदेकपरत्वं च तदभ्यासं विदुर्बुधाः ।। ३.२२.२४॥
Mr. Sathaye adds, “This has become my favorite definition of “study”.
I would recommend that येन  येन यदा यदा in the first line  be interpreted as
येन येन = येन येन (उपायेन) = by whatever means and
यदा यदा = at whatever time.”
Mr. Sathaye has already given some good hint on interpretation. Nevertheless, we shall proceed as per our usual scheme.
In these two verses together, we have many pronouns यत् येन (three times i.e. त्रिधा), तत् (five times i.e. पञ्चधा), and एतत् ।
All तत् and also यत् and एतत् are neuter.
The three येन are in third case singular तृतीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम्, the लिङ्गम् of the pronoun may however be masculine पुल्लिङ्गि or neuter नपुंसकलिङ्गि | We shall consider the appropriate gender when doing अन्वयाः अनुवादाः च ।
With this observation, we shall now study the other compounds and words.
(१) क्रियते “कृ” ८ उ. (= To do) इति धातुः । अत्र कर्मणि प्रयोगः अतः आत्मनेपदी । तस्य लट्-वर्तमाने तृतीय-पुरुषे एकवचनम् ।
(२) किञ्चित् “किम्” (= what) इति सर्वनाम । अत्र नपुंसकलिङ्गि । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च । अधिकेन “चित्” प्रत्ययेन “किञ्चित्” (= whatever) इति अर्थः ।
(३) यदा (= when) अव्ययम् ।
(४) विना (= without) अव्ययम् ।
(५) अभ्यासेन “अभि + आस्” २ प. (= To be intent at, To study) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अ”-प्रत्ययेन पुल्लिङ्गि सामान्यनाम “अभ्यास” (=  study) । तस्य तृतीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(६) न (= Not) अव्ययम् ।
(७) इह (=  ) अव्ययम् ।
(८) सिद्धिम् “सिध्” ४ प. (= To attain) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “इ”-प्रत्ययेन स्त्रीलिङ्गि सामान्यनाम “सिद्धि” (= attainment) । तस्य द्वितीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम् ।
(९) एति “ए = आ + इ” २ प. (= To go, To reach) इति धातुः । तस्य लट्-वर्तमाने तृतीय-पुरुषे एकवचनम् ।
(१०) कदाचन “कदा” (= When) इति अव्ययम् । अधिकेन “चन”-प्रत्ययेन “कदाचन” (= whenever) इति अव्ययम् ।
(११) तच्चिंतनम् ।
११.१ तस्य चिंतनम् = तच्चिंतनम् । षष्ठी-तत्पुरुषः ।
११.२ चिंतनम् “चिंत्” १० उ. (= To think, to deliberate upon) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अन”-प्रत्ययेन नपुंसकलिङ्गि सामान्यनाम “चिंतन” (=  thinking) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(१२) तत्कथनम् ।
१२.१ तस्य कथनम् = तत्कथनम् । षष्ठी-तत्पुरुषः ।
१२.२ कथनम् “कथ्” १० उ. (= To tell, to speak about) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अन”-प्रत्ययेन नपुंसकलिङ्गि सामान्यनाम “कथन” (=  speaking) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(१३) अन्योन्यम् ।
१३.१ (अयम्) अन्यः च (सः) अन्यः च = अन्यः + अन्यः = अन्योऽन्यः = अन्योन्यः । समाहार-द्वंद्वः । तम्
१३.२ अन्योन्यम् “अन्योन्य” (= this and that) इति सर्वनाम । तस्य द्वितीया विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(१४) तत्प्रबोधनम्
१४.१ तस्य प्रबोधनम् = तत्प्रबोधनम् । षष्ठी-तत्पुरुषः ।
१४.२ प्रबोधनम् “प्र + बुध्” १ उ. तथा ४ आ. (= To understand, to awaken) इति धातुः । तस्मात् प्रयोजकत्वेन “बोध्”(= To tell, to make understand) । तस्मात् अन”-प्रत्ययेन नपुंसकलिङ्गि सामान्यनाम “प्रबोधन” (= telling, discussion) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(१५) एकपरत्वम् ।
१५.१ एकः च परः च = एकपरः (= one and another)। समाहारद्वंद्वः ।
१५.२ एकपरत्वम् “एकपरः + त्व = एकपरत्व” इति “त्व”-प्रत्ययेन भाववाचकं नपुंसकलिङ्गि नाम (= consideration of one and another)। तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः एकवचनम् च ।
(१६) विदुः “विद्” २ प. तथा ७ आ. (= To know) इति धातुः । अत्र २ प. । तस्य “लट्”-वर्तमानकाले तृतीय-पुरुषे बहुवचनम् ।
(१७) बुधाः “बुध्” १ उ. तथा ४ आ. (= To know, to understand, to regard) इति धातुः । तस्मात् “अ”-प्रत्ययेन विशेषणम् तथा पुल्लिङ्गि सामान्यनाम च “बुध” (= knowledgeable, wise) । तस्य प्रथमा विभक्तिः बहुवचनम् च ।
३ अन्वयाः अनुवादाः च ।
३.१ येन येन येन (उपायेन) यदा यदा यत् किञ्चित् इह क्रियते तत् अभ्यासेन विना कदाचन सिद्धिम् न एति । = whatever one does  whenever and by whatever means, that does not become attained (does not yield significant result) without intense practice and study
३.२ तच्चिंतनम् तत्कथनम् अन्योन्यम् तत्प्रबोधनम् एतत् एक-पर-त्वम् च तत् बुधाः अभ्यासम् विदुः । = (Always) thinking of that only, talking about that only, discussing that only, that being the only (subject), this or that, such (focus) is called by the wise as “study”.
४ (A) टिप्पणयः ।
A) Apart from taking up this verse at the instance of Dr. Avinash Sathaye, I solicited his advice on analysis of the word विदुः detailed at (१६) विदुः
Very kindly he explained that विद् as a धातुः is special, since it takes two distinct present tense forms by विदो लटो वा .
The verse in गीता ४.५  is a good example of this variation:
तान्यहं वेद सर्वाणि न त्वं वेत्थ परंतप ।
This verse has  पाठभेदाः which replace वेद by वेद्मि  and/or  वेत्थ by वेत्सि .
So, by पाठभेद it may read
तान्यहं वेद्मि सर्वाणि न त्वं वेत्सि परंतप ।
These occur in different manuscripts!
Two distinct patterns of Present Tense of विद् धातुः are -
One is the familiar वेद्मि विद्वः विद्मः and so on,
while another is वेद विद्व विद्म (first person) वेत्थ विदथुः विद (second person) and वेद विदतुः विदुः (third person)
Its लिट् (परोक्षभूतकालः) has either reduplication forms or with कृ supplemented.
४ (B) टिप्पणयः ।
In श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता one comes across many quotations advocating focused, unwavering, passionate practice and study
अनन्यचेताः सततं यो मां स्मरति नित्यशः (८-१४)
अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते (९-२२)
स्वाध्याभ्यसनम् चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते (१७-१५)
तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया (४-३४)
अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना (८-८)
In ८-८, अभ्यास focused, unwavering, passionate study is called as a Yoga अभ्यासयोग itself !! Here also न अन्यगामिना चेतसा means “by mind which does not go anywhere also”, i.e. by having a mind which does not suffer any distractions, meaning “by having a mind which stays focused.”
Why Newton came up with so many discoveries in so many subjects, was only because he devoted focused, passionate study. Apples had been falling off the trees. But when an apple hit Newton on his head, “ठक् !” he realised “Gravity” !
People had been swimming and floating in water. But Archimedes jumped out of the bathtub shouting “Eurekaa ! Eurekaa !” unmindful that he was running nude. His mind was obsessed to find a solution to the problem of adulteration of gold in the King’s crown. Phenomenon of buoyancy was the answer !
These two shloka’s द्वे श्लोकौ in य़ोगवासिष्ठ exactly underscore such passion, focus, obsession with a subject of study. Only then a study results into सिद्धि attainment.
पाणिनी created the all-time reference work on Sanskrit grammar only by such study of the subject.
Do we know the real name of व्यास-मुनि ? He is also mentioned as पाराशर (son of मुनि पराशर)  and as कृष्णद्वैपायन, but most commonly known as व्यास, more properly as वेद-व्यास because he rearranged वेदाः (विशेषेण आस, वि + आस = व्यास) The monumental work done by him made it as his name itself !
ऋषि’s मुनिs observed तप’s – typically one tapa is regarded to be a period of twelve years. I venture a guess that by observing a tapa, they stayed focused on a subject of study. Obvious result was their monumental work,
  • नाट्यशास्त्र by भरत-मुनि for example or
  • भृगुसंहिता by महर्षि भृगु. In tenth chapter of श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता श्रीकृष्ण-भगवान् says “महर्षीणाम् भृगुरहम्” भृगुसंहिता is the reference work on astronomy and astrology. महर्षि भृगु thus attained the capability to know the past, present and future त्रिकालज्ञान of how the astronomical objects move and will keep moving in the cosmos and how they influence all life in the world.
