४ टिप्पणयः ।
१ मुनि is defined in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता as
दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगत-स्पृहः |
वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते ॥ २-५६ ॥
२ The two types of नाट्य-भावौ manifesting on शिव’s body are called as लास्य (feminish) and ताण्डव (manly). In this form शिव is called as अर्ध-नारी-नटेश्वरः (= half-feminish God in dancing pose)
३ नाट्य is detailed as a holistic science in नाट्यशास्त्रम् by भरतमुनिः | As can be understood, a drama has many aspects – the dramatist, the actors, costumes and make-ups, singing, music, dance, the stage-design including the back-drops and lighting, the auditorium and its design, etc.
४ Some people focused only on the dance aspect and cultivated into a dance style known as भरतनाट्यम् । This style is mostly practiced in Tamilnadu in Southern India. There are many regional dance styles such as मोहिनीआट्टम् in Kerala, कुचिपुडी in Andhra, उडीसी in Orissa. One may find most of these four dance styles fairly similar to each other. But there are other folk-dance styles such as कथकली in Kerala, which is quite distinct by the facial masking. The कथक evolved as dance of courtesans during the Mughal reign more specifically in courts of Nawabs in Northern India.
५ It is regarded that among संस्कृत dramas the best is अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम्  by कालिदास. This has been made into an all-time statement by the श्लोकः –
काव्येषु नाटकम् रम्यम् तत्र रम्या शकुन्तला |
तत्रापि चतुर्थोऽङ्कः तत्र श्लोकचतुष्टयम् ||
Maybe, we should study that श्लोकचतुष्टयम् also in one of our lessons, since it has been so much eulogized.
६ वृत्तम् here is शार्दूलविक्रीडितम्  having 19 syllables in each line and गणाः – म स ज स त त ग ।
शुभमस्तु |

५ टिप्पणयः ।
1This सुभाषितम् is an utterance by the dance-teacher, who taught dance to मालविका, the heroine of the play मालविकाग्निमित्रम् ।
2Obvious by the सुभाषितम् is the pleasure a teacher would enjoy, when the student (disciple) is special. My father was a teacher. He used to mention a proverb, शिष्यादिच्छेत् पराजयम् | Teach in such manner that your disciple will excel you ! Pleasure in being left behind ?
I remember a quote of a choreographer of Hindi films, who said, “To choreograph a dance number for Madhuri Dikshit to perform is such a pleasing experience !” She said exactly what महाकविः कालिदासः says here of course so much poetically !
3An artist and his art, a teacher and the disciple these are all very charming mutual relationships. A student should also be so ardent, that it should be a pleasure for the teacher to impart the knowledge. Would it not be so sad, if the teacher keeps feeling that he is wasting his time and effort in teaching a disinterested, indifferent, dumb student ?
4There is an interesting श्लोकः in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता –
देवान् भावयतानेन ते देवा भावयन्तु वः |
परस्परं भावयन्तः श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यथ || 3-11 ||
Here also mutual benevolence परम् श्रेयः both for Gods and devotees is mentioned. Note, benevolence for Gods also !
5There is a poetic axiom here, that raindrops falling in a sea-shell become pearls. In fact the axiom more completely presumes that the raindrops should be of rains which fall when constellation नक्षत्रं in the sky is स्वाति |
6According to the astronomical almanac, स्वाति-नक्षत्रं will be there approximately in second half of October (अश्विन-मासः) months. Rains in October अश्विन-मासे वर्षा is a rare phenomenon. The poetic axiom thus sets difficult or challenging conditions for formation of pearls, that too in sea-shells, not in shells on river beds !
7The word पात्रम् was seen earlier in Lesson # 35 in श्लोकौ 17-20 and 17-22 in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता । There the word was mentioned to detail सात्विकम् and तामस् दानम् respectively. It comes to mind that here कालिदासः has sort of coined a definition of the word पात्रम् | आधातुः शिल्पम् यत्र न्यस्तं भवति, तत् पात्रम् | Donation of a donor is also आधातुः शिल्पम् ! Receiver of the donation, a person, a thing or even a cause or even the mind of a student or a computer-program is पात्रम् ! wow !!
In टिप्पणयः in Lesson # 35, I had expressed reservation, whether the meaning considered there for the word पात्रम् was satisfactory ! I think a very, very good definition evolves from this श्लोकः by कालिदासः !
8The word इव gives out the काव्यालङ्कारः here. इव connects a relationship of similarity between two instances. Such poetic adornment is उपमालङ्कारः . Between the two instances, one is a statement उपमेयम् and the other, its example उपमानम् | आधातुः शिल्पम् गुणान्तरं व्रजति is the statement. पयोदस्य जलम् मुक्ताफलतां (व्रजति) is its example.
9The meter here is आर्या | लक्षणपदम्  of आर्या-वृत्तम् is –
यस्या: पादे प्रथमे द्वादश मात्रा तथा तृतीयेऽपि |
अष्टादश द्वितीये चतुर्थे पञ्चदश सार्या ||
I would dare to give, shall I say, a better analysis (?) of आर्यावृत्तम् –
I think each line in this meter should be considered as having three sections. For example, here –
1-1 पात्रविशेषे न्यस्तं (pause)  21 – 122 – 22 = 12
1-2 गुणान्तरं व्रजति (pause)  1212 – 111 = 9
1-3 शिल्पमाधातुः |                 21-222 = 9
2-1 जलमिव समुद्रशुक्तौ (pause)1111 – 12122 = 12
2-2 मुक्ताफलतां (pause) 22-112 = 8
2-3 पयोदस्य ||                              1221 = 6
In लक्षणपदम्
1-1 यस्या पादे प्रथमे (pause) 22 22 112 = 12
1-2 द्वादश मात्रा (pause) 211 22 = 8
1-3 तथा तृतीयेऽपि |              12 1221 = 9
2-1 अष्टादश द्वितीये (pause) 2212122 = 12
2-2 चतुर्थे पञ्च- (pause) 122 – 21 = 8
2-3 दश सार्या ||                  11 – 22 = 6
We had in Lesson # 3
1-1 शरदि न वर्षति गर्जति   111 – 1 – 211 – 211 = 12
1-2 वर्षति वर्षासु              211 – 221 = 9
1-3 निःस्वनो मेघः              212 – 22 = 9
2-1 नीचो वदति न कुरुते    22 – 111 – 1 – 112 = 12
2-2 न वदति सुजनः              1 – 111 – 112 = 8
2-3 करोत्येव                            1221 = 6
As can be seen, first line of लक्षणपदम्
यस्या: पादे प्रथमे द्वादश मात्रा तथा तृतीयेऽपि |
i.e. fisrt and third पादौ to have द्वादश १२ मात्राः is validated everywhere.
Considering the second line of लक्षणपदम्, patterns in पात्रविशेषे… and शरदि न वर्षति …. have better matching 8 मात्राः in 2-2 and 6 मात्राः in 2-3, than the pattern in लक्षणपदम्. In fact लक्षणपदम् somehow does not seem to rhyme properly. Even 8 in 1-2 and 9 in 1-3 do not sum up to अष्टादश द्वितीये 18 in second quarter.
Also चतुर्थः पादः, i.e. 2-2 plus 2-3 should have 8 + 6 = 14 मात्राः, not पञ्चदश as mentioned in लक्षणपदम् |
Basically however, the concept of a meter वृत्तम् also called as छन्दः sets a definite rhyming style, so much so, that anyone can sing the verse, regardless, whether one has musical voice or not !
That is how वेदाः got passed on from generation to generation and stayed alive over thousands of years even when, it is said, they were not written down at all.
10संस्कृतम्  has been criticized that it demands lot of recitation and memorizing.
But it stayed alive over thousands of years with all its charm and glory and wisdom, primarily by virtue of that ! A proverb does say, “There is no shortcut to success !”
I think, the problem is from the materialistic outlook, craving to have as much as possible, as fast as possible.  Often the discretion for means to be fair may as well be compromised.
I feel uncomfortable, when people seem to be wanting to master संस्कृतम् as fast as possible. To my mind, संस्कृतम् is to be absorbed and enjoyed क्षणशः कणशः also अजरामरवत् | That is the basic thought of these lessons for “Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach” संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनम् by studying good sayings सुभाषितानि | Let us carry on absorbing the morals and enjoying संस्कृतम्.
I am sure, संस्कृतम् will grow in our mind and we shall also have a richer, healthier, more and more संस्कृतम् मनः cultured mind !
If that would not happen after learning संस्कृतम् however much, it will be what श्रीकृष्णभगवान्  said in the last श्लोकः in tenth chapter –
अथवा बहुनैतेन किम् ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन |
If not, what use will it be for you, Arjuna, by your knowing all this much ?
शुभमस्तु |

५ टिप्पणयः ।
1Taking clue from the style of Sanskrit commentators, I thought of doing away with the tabular structures for words (nouns नामानि pronouns सर्वनामानि and adjectives विशेषणानि च), for verbal derivatives धातुसाधितानि and for verbs क्रियापदानि च |
I have attempted समासानां विग्रहाः also rather using item-numbering style instead of the tabular structure.
2On the whole, this style seems useful to dwell on some etymological व्युत्पत्तिः aspects of different words also. For example, see the detailing of गुह्यकः at 3-19.
3In saying that a cloud is nothing but a mixture of smoke, lightning, water and wind, कालिदास, the poet is sounding to make a statement of scientific analysis !
Interestingly the statement also brings out that the cloud contains three of the पञ्चमहाभूतानि – ज्योतिः, सलिलम् मरुत् च or आपः तेजः वायुः च |
Because a cloud hovers in the sky, the fourth element चतुर्थं महाभूतं आकाशः is inherently there in the backdrop.
4In using the word प्राणिभिः, कालिदासः seems to have taken cognizance of birds carrying messages. So the skill of carrying messages does not vest only with humans !
हंसः the swan is a famous messenger mentioned in नल-दमयन्ति-आख्यानम् within महाभारतम् !
In बाणभट्ट ’s कादंबरी the hero वैशंपायनः is reborn as a parrot endowed with human speech.
Human speech of birds and animals is a very common concept in Sanskrit literature, not to forget पञ्चतन्त्रम् and हितोपदेशः ।
5Meter of complete मेघदूतम् is “मन्दाक्रान्ता”-वृत्तम्, which has 17 syllables in each line having गणाः म, भ, न, त, त, ग, ग | The natural pace of the meter is slow मन्दं क्रमति । Poet’s idea in using such meter of slow pace seems to be prompted by the need to narrate a story and to explain to अचेतनं मेघम् not only the संदेशः but also to explain to him the path to be followed.
मन्दाक्रान्ता-वृत्तस्य लक्षणपदम्  Line summarising the गणाः and the name of meter is -
मन्दाक्रान्तां बुधिरसनगैर्-मो भनौ तौ ग-युग्मम्  |
6Since there is a mismatch between the characteristics required of one to carry a message and characteristics of cloud, the poetic adornment काव्यालङ्कारः here is called as विषमालङ्कारः, an adornment borne by paradox or from converse entities.
Having deduced in the fourth line a commonly acceptable observation and conclusion and almost a justification of the paradox, the verse also becomes an example of अर्थान्तरन्यासालङ्कारः a poetic adornment borne by transposition of meaning.
7The verse also suggests a moral that one should not allow the amorous thoughts to blow away discretion and awareness of surroundings.
8Amorous thoughts causing discretion to be blown away and amorous thoughts causing obliviousness to surroundings brings to mind, that in UAE, the authorities made it illegal to indulge in amorous acts in public places.
I think, it is a good law to be made into a universal law. Being oblivious to surroundings and allowing discretion to be blown away, more so by amorous thoughts and acts do not make graceful social behaviour, anywhere.

७ टिप्पणयः ।

1I have changed the structure of Table 3, to give शब्दार्थाः nearer to मूल-संज्ञा, just next to संज्ञायाः प्रकारः |
Also for the column लिङ्गम् in this table, I have added (अत्र). This helps to explain लिङ्गम् relevant to the context especially for pronouns and adjectives.
2The poet has used the phrase न एतादृशाः  very charmingly to imply (not like what will satisfy your thirst)
आर्द्रय् meaning “To make wet” is an interesting verb formed from an adjective आर्द्र meaning “wet”. In Sanskrit we have nouns, adjectives, indeclinables obtained from verbs and verbs obtained from nouns, adjectives, even from sounds. Poets coin their own verbs such as बुद्-बुदायते to say bubbling happens.
One wonders why people would think that Sanskrit is a dead language, not adaptive to reforms. Even कालिदासः himself is said to have taken liberty to introduce reforms, where people had to grant them, saying, निरङ्कुशाः कवयः “no restraint for poets !” Of course that would be admissible to great poets like कालिदासः |
3We have one more synonym for cloud, अम्भोधः
4द्वे सुभाषिते in Lesson # 34 were addressing the cloud, requesting the cloud to quench the thirst of चातक, when the time would be appropriate, without being indifferent to the important aspect of charity to be in right time.
There again, in “गर्जसि मेघ …” the चातक bird was himself addressing the cloud.
In “वितर वारिद ….” The poet was addressing the cloud.
In this one here, it is again the poet addressing not the cloud, but the चातक.
The messages and the morals are neither for the cloud nor for the चातक.
This style of addressing someone else, when the message is meant for another (for us all !) is called as अन्योक्तिः (=अन्यस्मै उक्तिः, चतुर्थी-तत्पुरुषः, meaning “address to someone else”)
Sanskrit poetry is full of such literary ornaments अलङ्काराः ।
5In Lesson # 34, mention was also made of different meters used for composing poetry.
Different meters are also suited to different moods. But some meters can be suitable for more-than-one different moods. Some moods can be expressed in more-than-one different meters also.
गर्जसि मेघ … was in मात्रासमक meter
वितर वारिद … was in द्रुत-विलम्बित
This one is in शार्दूलविक्रीडित ।
6शार्दूलविक्रीडित is a meter with a definite pattern of syllabic weightages –
19 syllables in each line
Since syllables can be either of 1 or 2 weightage, the pattern of syllabic weightages in शार्दूलविक्रीडित is 2-2-2, 1-1-2, 1-2-1, 1-1-2, 2-2-1, 2-2-1, 2
For easier identification of the patterns one looks at a line in groups of 3 syllables. Here we have 6 groups गणाः of syllables and an ending syllable of weightage 2
गणाः of different patterns are also given names
1-1-1     is न-गणः, 1-1-2 is स-गणः 1-2-1 is ज-गणः 1-2-2 is य-गणः
2-1-1 is भ-गणः  2-1-2 is र-गणः 2-2-1 is त-गणः 2-2-2 is म-गणः
A stand alone syllable of weightage 1 is called ल an acronym for लघु meaning small.
A stand alone syllable of weightage 2 is called ग an acronym for गुरु meaning large.
(पाणिनी is said to have composed)* a simple phrase य-मा-ता-रा-ज-भा-न-स-ल-गं which helps to remember all the permutations of गण-patterns and also their names.
For example, य-मा-ता is pattern 1-2-2 which is य-गणः, the beginning letter of this group of three.
By itself य-मा-ता-रा-ज-भा-न-स-ल-गं is not at all a meaningful word. But as a सूत्रम् it is so intelligently composed encoding names of all गणाःcombining therein their patterns also !
The शार्दूलविक्रीडितम्  meter has गणाः – म, स, ज, स, त, त, ग |
To facilitate remembering this feature of शार्दूलविक्रीडितम् there is also a one-liner containing the gaNaaH of the meter -
सूर्याश्वैर्यदि  मः सजौ सततगाः शार्दूलविक्रीडितम् |
द्रुतविलंबित meter वृत्तम् in “वितर वारिद वारि दवातुरे ।” has गणाः – न, भ, भ, र and
is explained by the one-liner “द्रुतविलंबितमाह नभौ भरौ ।”
The one-liners are also in the exact meters !
मात्रासमक meter of गर्जसि मेघ is a meter not structured by गणाः, but by total value of syllabic weightages मात्राणां संख्या in each line. मात्रासमक is a मात्रा-वृत्त not an अक्षरवृत्त
मात्राणां संख्या in  मात्रासमक is 16.
One can see structure and refinement in almost every other aspect of Sanskrit language. Sanskrit is Sanskrit by virtue of all these.
What is detailed here is just a glimpse of Sanskrit prosody.
* Mention of (पाणिनी is said to have composed) is based on such mention in a 19th-century book by Mr. Charles Phillip brown
7Such encoding of wisdom combined with poetic fervor is just marvelous, rarely found in literature of other languages. Is it not a speciality of Sanskrit ?
We did study इन्द्र-वायुर् … लीलावती’s coding of solution of magic squares, right ?
8द्वे सुभाषिते in Lesson # 34 both addressing the cloud readily brought to mind the famous poem मेघदूतम् by महाकविः कालिदासः | One श्लोकः therein is a good satire on human nature, especially how people engrossed in amorous thoughts seem to lose all discretion of the surroundings.
I would like to take up that for study in the next lesson.
9Marvellous combination of wisdom and enjoyment becomes a compelling reason to pursue learning Sanskrit, learning it, re-learning it and re-learning it, and re-learning it …. !

७ टिप्पणयः ।
1I find it very challenging to do satisfactory अनुवादाः even when the अन्वयाः sound to be okay and शब्दार्थाः of all words are compiled.
2The exercise becomes more challenging with the fact that object like पात्र is referred in सप्तमी case पात्रे in 17-20 and in चतुर्थी case पात्रेभ्यः in 17-22.
3Likewise in 17-20, अनुपकारिणे is in चतुर्थी case, whereas देशे काले पात्रे are all in सप्तमी case. That makes it challenging to be sure, whether अन्वयः as done is also satisfactory or not.
4In the fourteenth chapter in the biography of स्वामी गजानन महाराज of शेगांव  there is an instance of an over-generous person, तात्या बण्डोपन्त, who ended up becoming a popper himself and nobody would come to his help, none of even those whom he had helped. He decided to go to Himalayas or to commit suicide. महाराज intervened and revealed to him a treasure buried under a tree in तात्या’s farm.
5The deity concept associated with almost every trait of human character and every aspect of human needs is charming. For example Goddess लक्ष्मी is the deity of wealth. The deity concept implores one to respect wealth as one would respect Goddess लक्ष्मी. So even when indulging in charity, wealth should be donated in a manner that respect for wealth would not be dented, i.e. it will go into wrong hands or for wrong purposes.
6Likewise in eighteenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता it is strongly advocated that the good knowledge preached in it should be transmitted with great caution that it will not go to wrong minds. See this श्लोकः –
इदम् ते नातपस्काय नाभक्ताय कदाचन |
न चाशुश्रूषवे वाच्यं य च मां योऽभ्यसूयति || 18-67 ||
I first came across such caution in फलश्रुति in श्रीगणपत्यथर्वशीर्षम्
इदम् अथर्वशीर्षं अशिष्याय न देयम् |
यो यदि मोहाद्दास्यति स पापीयान् भवति ||
At that time I wondered, why a sacred text as श्रीगणपत्यथर्वशीर्षम् should have such restrictive caution.
7There has of course been the recent instance however, reported by Mr. Himanshu Pota from Australia. It seems that Christian fundamentalists in particular have been indulging in wanton wrong interpretations and malicious censure of Sanskrit scriptures.

७ टिप्पणयः ।
1As can be seen from the अन्वयाः and अनुवादाः both at 1.6 and 2.6, the theme is the same, the characters are the same.
2Because the theme is the same, we see also good number of synonyms.
Water = तोय, जल, वारि, पयस्
Cloud = मेघ, वारिद (we can similarly derive तोयद, जलद, पयोद)
Wind = वात, मरुत्
Give = दा (यच्छसि) वितृ (वितर)
3Charming onomatopoeia is employed in both –
in (१) at गर्जसि यच्छसि at दैवात् वातः and also at क्व त्वं क्वाहं क्व च ….
In (2)  वारिद वारि दवातुरे at चातक पोतके and also at क्व च भवान् क्व च पयः क्व च चातकः ।
4The चातक bird mentioned here is a bird of poetic axiom. The bird is assumed to survive only by drinking rainwater, directly from the clouds, catching the drops right in the air, i.e. before they fall. The longing and wait of चातक bird for rainwater is hence used idiomatically to speak of anxious wait, being similar to the wait of चातक.
5Likes and dislikes will differ. To my mind the rhythm of the meter is better in (1) and onomatopoeia is better in (2)
6Meter वृत्तम् or छन्दः used in (1) is मात्रासमक, which is used by आदिशङ्कराचार्य in his famous poem मूढ जहीहि धनागमतृष्णाम् ।
7Meter वृत्तम् or छन्दः used in (2) is द्रुत-विलम्बित ।
8The anxiety of the चातक bird is possibly a simile used to denote the anxiety of a farmer anxiously waiting for rains to water his parched fields, especially after a hot summer, connoted in (2) by the word दवातुरे or by the phrase व्याकुलितोऽहम्  in (1)
9It is an interesting advice even for a philanthropist that philanthropy ought to be in right time.
10In the seventeenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, there are the following त्रयः श्लोकाः, wherein philanthropy has been categorized into three classes, the most appropriate one सात्विक, the mediocre or average one राजस,  and the grossly improper one तामस ।
11
दातव्यं इति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे ।
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् || 17-20 ||
यत्तु प्रत्युपकारार्थं फलमुद्दिश्य वा पुनः ।

अदेशकाले यद्दानं अपात्रेभ्यश्च दीयते ।
असत्कृतम् अवज्ञातं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् || 17-22 ||
We shall study these in the next lesson.
12द्वे सुभाषिते here bring to mind another great saying in Sanskrit “एकं सत् विप्रा बहुधा वदन्ति ।”, meaning, “Truth is one, the intelligent ones put it in various ways”

७ टिप्पणयः ।
1The phrase “this sun has set” reminds me of a Marathi poem “To the setting sun” मावळत्या दिनकरा
The poet says, “Everyone pays respects to the rising sun. Nobody bothers for the setting sun.” In योग-क्रिया also सूर्य-नमस्काराः are better done in the early morning.
2“Taking part of life, this sun has set” can be a thought, which will cause different feelings in minds of different people.
3What will be the feeling of a person in jail sentenced for life? What answer will he get for himself, if he further asks to himself, “What was done, was it good ?”
Or
would be too late for him to think of all that ?
4There is another Sanskrit saying पश्चात्तापेन शुद्धति “Repentance purifies”. Maybe, even a person in jail can adopt an exemplifying conduct and redeem for himself some respect by his conduct. It is never too late to adopt the right intuitions.
Possibly the best intuition, especially for a person jailed for life can be to focus on deep meditation and spiritualism.
लोकमान्य टिळक wrote गीता-रहस्य his commentary on श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता during his 6 years in prison in Mandalay !
5We earlier studied another सुभाषितम् advising in its second line गृहीत इव केशेषु मृत्युना धर्ममाचरेत् ।
This one is in the same vein. There is a difference though. गृहीत इव केशेषु मृत्युना धर्ममाचरेत् advises a caution to be borne in mind all the time.
This one अहनि अहनि बोद्धव्यम् किम् एतत् सुकृतं कृतम् is more of a reflective, a post-fact thinking.
6The phrase आयुषः खण्डम् आदाय has in it a touching feeling, feeling of a loss, “Oh, a day is gone by”
7There is another Sanskrit proverb गतं न शोच्यम् One may not keep grieving of the day gone and lost. But the advice अहनि अहनि बोद्धव्यम् should be a good reflection to adopt corrections and improvements.
शुभमस्तु ।

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 32

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 32
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य द्वात्रिंशः (३२) पाठः ।
To carry forward from where we closed for Lesson # 31, let us study this second line of || 8-3 || in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता -

This is actually the reply by श्रीभगवान् to one of अर्जुन’s questions in 8-1 and 8-2, specifically in reply to the question
“किम् कर्म ?” (=what is meant by कर्म ?)
भूत = past, what is gone, over.
भाव = present Actually literal meaning of भाव is feeling, sentiment, nature, as in स्वभाव, meaning nature, inherent characteristics of oneself. But another definition can be “भाव्यते इति भावः” meaning, भाव is what can be sensed, felt, experienced. This can happen only in the present. Hence भाव = present.
One comes across these words भूत and भाव in a substantially different context and meaning in 10-5 in the phrase “भवन्ति भावाः भूतानाम्”
Or one can apply that meaning here also. It all depends upon how, by what all perceptions, one would see the meaning of the total phrase भूत-भाव-उद्भव-करः ।
उद्भव = what emanates. In 10-30 one comes across another phrase “उद्भवश्च भविष्यताम्” meaning emanation of the future. So, one can take उद्भव to mean “future”.
विसर्गः = happening, event. Actually if “event” = e + vent, where e = out and vent = release. Thus event = what is released out, hence the happening.
By such thinking विसर्गः would be something that happens and hence an event of the present. But when saying that some event is happening in the present, along with it something has been pushed into the past. So an event of the present also causes something to become “past”. Thus every present event has a context of a past event. Every present event also forebodes a future. If you are putting together 2 + 2, it is going to result into 4. When bringing in the second 2 to add to the first 2, the first 2 becomes the past, the second 2 becomes the present and the process of addition forebodes the result 4, the future.
Such eventuality of something can happen in the present only by pushing something into the past and would forebode something to happen in the immediate future, all such eventuality will keep happening moment after moment, right ? Is there any steady state any time, that nothing will be happening at all ? Clearly the answer is “No”. This is what is emphatically endorsed in,
न हि कश्चित् क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत्  || 3-5 ||
no being न कश्चित् जातु: is ever devoid of activity अकर्मकृत्, not even for a moment क्षणमपि.
Or also see
न हि देहभृता शक्यम् त्यक्तुं कर्माण्यशेषतः ||18-11||
whatever has an embodiment cannot forsake कर्माणि totally, (अशेषतः means with no remainder, with remainder being zero) i.e. forsake कर्म in a manner that no कर्म remains, no कर्म is happening.
न शक्यम् = this is not possible.
Such incessant eventuality being the inherent nature or fact of all life, how can one pinpoint the beginning or end of one कर्म or the other ?
So, one, who has transcended all qualitativeness has become गुणातीतः, will forsake all concepts of beginnings and endings. He will end up becoming सर्वारम्भ-(परि)त्यागी, right ?
In this interpretation भूत-भाव-उद्भव-करः is taken to mean what makes past, present and future, “(यः) भूतं, भावं, उद्भवं च करोति (सः)”
Another or alternate meaning of विसर्गः can be manifestation. In grammar, विसर्गः is the vowel sound of aspiration. Aspiration is again something that emanates, comes out. Emanation or manifestation does not have to be necessarily visible. A thought emanating within the mind may not be visible to the world. Yet it has of course emanated even if internally.
कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैर्-इन्द्रियैर्-अपि |
योगिनः कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा (आ)त्म-शुद्धये || 5-11 ||
कर्म happens कायेन (= by body) मनसा (= by mind) or बुद्ध्या (= by intellect) This is also so stated in
शरीर-वाङ्-मनोभिर् यत् कर्म प्रारभते नरः || 18-15 ||
यत् कर्म नरः शरीर-वाङ्-मनोभिः  प्रारभते (= what कर्म man commences by body (and/or) by speech (and/or) by mind).
Is it not fascinating to see how minutely कर्म has been defined as manifestations, eventualties emanating whether by organs of sense or by organs of action or even internally in the mind or by intellect ?
By another way of interpretation, भूत-भाव-उद्भव-करः विसर्गः can be deciphered to be meaning
(यः) भूतेषु भावानां उद्भवः करोति (सः) विसर्गः,
meaning
such eventuality which will cause भूताः (= beings, all those things, which have assumed an existence) to experience भावाः feelings, sentiments, sensations
or
such eventuality which causes feelings, sensations भावाः to emanate उद्भवः in beings भूतेषु ।
2. कर्म-संज्ञितः = is called as karma
2.1 संज्ञितः = संज्ञां इतः ।
इतः =  past passive participle कर्मणि-भूतकालवाचकं धातुसाधितं विशेषणम् of
इ (2 प.) meaning “to go”
meaning of इतः = what is gone to, what is attained
संज्ञा = definition
संज्ञां इतः = gone to the definition, having attained the definition
2.2 कर्म-संज्ञितः = कर्म इति संज्ञां इतः = what has attained the definition as karma i.e. what is called as karma or what is defined as कर्म ।
3. On the whole अन्वयः of भूतभावोद्भवकरः विसर्गः कर्म-संज्ञितः can be put either as
3.1 (यः) भूतेषु भावानां उद्भवः करोति (सः) विसर्गः कर्म इति संज्ञां इतः (अस्ति) or
3.2 (यः) भूतं, भावं, उद्भवं च करोति (सः) विसर्गः कर्म इति संज्ञां इतः (अस्ति) ।
I have not dwelt much on meaning in (3.1) because to say, “only that, which causes  भूतेषु भावानां उद्भवः is to be called as, to be defined as कर्म”, does not appeal to me to be a proper definition. If a plant grows out of a seed, the plant also is a भूत and the growth of a plant is a कर्म, with or without there being भावानां उद्भवः । When I first read this श्लोक: || 8-3 || in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, it was the meaning (3.2), which came to mind. And after all the analysis, as presented here, meaning in (3.2) appeals to me to be the most appropriate interpretation. To get to the significance of the word विसर्गः is still a challenge. I have tried to make some sense of it. But I shall be obliged for all comments, criticisms, suggestions.
Consummate conclusion of all the discussion is, for us to be clear, that we do not embark upon anything, saying “now I shall do this !” Renounce all concept of commencing with one कर्म or another, become सर्व-आरम्भ-(परि)-त्यागी | That is the step to become गुणातीतः |
To recapitulate from where we started in Lesson # 31,
“…to acquire equanimity between likeable or dislikeable speech प्रियः or अप्रियः वादः one should become गुणातीतः | and to become गुणातीतः means –
सम-दुःख-सुखः स्व-स्थः सम-लोष्टाश्म-काञ्चनः |
तुल्य-प्रियाप्रियो धीरः तुल्य-निन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः || 14-24 ||

मानापमानयोस्तुल्यः  तुल्यो मित्रारिपक्षयोः |
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी गुणातीतः स उच्यते || 14-25 ||

In the exercise of exploring the meaning of
  • these two श्लोकौ in the 14 th chapter and
  • of the second line in श्लोक: || 8-3 ||
I migrated into the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 10th and 18th chapters, as well. I hope, that readers will appreciate that these migrations were relevant and essential to delve as deep as was possible into the meanings.
शुभमस्तु ।

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 31

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 31
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य एकत्रिंशः (३१) पाठः ।
As mentioned in the previous lesson, we shall now study the following श्लोकः in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता which contains the advice to acquire equanimity between likeable or dislikeable speech प्रियः or अप्रियः वादः -
समदुःखसुखः स्वस्थः समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः |
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरः तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः || 14-24 ||
Actually the sentence starting with this श्लोकः becomes complete in the next श्लोकः, which is –

This type of detailing is called as भाष्यम्. Some of the famous भाष्याणि on श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता are
  1. “शाङ्कर-भाष्यम्” by आदिशङ्कराचार्यः CE 788-820
  2. by रामानुजाचार्यः, CE 1017-1137
  3. saint ज्ञानेश्वर who delivered in CE 1290, more than 700 years ago his भावार्थदीपिका to a Marathi audience. In Maharashtra this भाष्यम् is revered as a वेदः and is better known as “ज्ञानेश्वरी”
  4. “Geetaa as it is” by स्वामी प्रभुपाद, who founded the हरे कृष्ण movement
  5. “गीतारहस्य” by Lokamaanya Tilak, authored by him when he was jailed by the British for 6 years from 1907 to1913 in Mandaalay, which is in present Myaanmaar
  6. “Geetaa as a philosophy of God-Realisation” by “गुरुदेव” रानडे, 1886-1957 a philosopher saint of great acclaim.
The difference between शब्दार्थाः, अन्वयार्थाः and भावार्थाः should be understood as –
शब्दार्थाः = literal meaning of the words
अन्वयार्थाः = meaning of words and phrases in a given context
भावार्थाः = meaning revealing on deep deliberation

1 सम-दुःख-सुखः = दुःखे वा सुखे वा समः ।
  • दुःखे = (when) in sorrow
  • वा = or
  • सुखे = (when) in happiness
  • समः = equanimous
2 स्व-स्थः = स्वस्मिन् स्थितः ।
  • स्वस्मिन् = at oneself
  • स्थः = तिष्ठति इति = stays at
  • Hence स्वस्थः = stays at oneself, meaning “stays unperturbed”
3 सम-लोष्ट-अश्म-काञ्चनः =  अश्मानां वा  काञ्चनस्य वा लोष्ट: यस्मै समः, सः ।
  • लोष्टः = lot of
  • अशमः = stone
  • काञ्चनम् = gold
  • समः = equanimous
  • Hence सम-लोष्ट-अश्म-काञ्चनः = equanimous with lots of stones or with lots of gold
4 तुल्य-प्रिय-अप्रियः = प्रियेषु वा अप्रियेषु तुल्यः ।
  • प्रियेषु = at like-ables or at love-ables
  • वा = or
  • अप्रियेषु = यानि प्रियाणि न, तेषु = at those which are not love-ables or at those, which are not like-ables, i.e. at unloveables or at dislikeables
  • तुल्यः = balanced
  • Hence तुल्य-प्रिय-अप्रियः = balanced at likeables or dislekeables or at love-ables or unlove-ables
5 धीरः = bold, meaning one, who can face anything and everything with a steadfast mind
6 तुल्य-निन्दा-आत्म-सं-स्तुतिः ।
  • तुल्य = balanced
  • निन्दा = abuses, adverse comments
  • आत्म = self
  • सं = comprehensive, total
  • स्तुतिः = praise
  • So, तुल्य-निन्दा-आत्म-सं-स्तुतिः = balanced at abuses or adverse comments by others or balanced at total or comprehensive praise of oneself by others
7 मान-(अप)मानयोः तुल्यः ।
  • तुल्यः = balanced
  • मान-(अप)मानयोः =
  • मान = respect
  • (अप)मान = dishonour
  • मान-(अप)मानयोः तुल्यः = balanced at respect or dishonour
8 तुल्यः मित्र-अरि-पक्षयोः ।
  • तुल्यः = balanced
  • मित्र = friend
  • अरि = enemy
  • पक्ष = side
  • Hence तुल्यः मित्र-अरि-पक्षयोः = balanced whether friend or foe is on the sides
9 सर्व-आरम्भ-(परि)त्यागी ।
  • सर्व = all
  • आरम्भ = beginning, start-off, commencement
  • (परि) = wholesome, circumspect, all-round
  • त्यागी = one, who renounces
  • Hence सर्व-आरम्भ-(परि)त्यागी means one who renounces wholesomely all beginnings, means one, who does not (ever) hold that something new is beginning at any time, which further means that कर्माणि keep emanating from one कर्म to the other.
In the eighth chapter the definition of karma itself is given as
भूत-भावोद्भव-करो विसर्गः कर्मसंज्ञितः || 8-3 ||

This line merits a clearer understanding. Without that clarity, it will not be possible to understand the significance of सर्व-आरम्भ-(परि)त्यागी. Let us get to understand this line in || 8-3|| soon after completing the word-by-word understanding of these two verses ||14-24 || and ||14-25||, which are on hand.
10 गुण-(अति)इतः
  • गुण = quality, characteristics which may be saatvika i.e. chaste or raajasa i.e. average or taamasa i.e. unchaste
  • (अति) = excessively, beyond
  • इतः = gone
  • So, गुण-(अति)इतः means one, who has gone beyond the influence of गुणाः, i.e. beyond being सात्विक or राजस or तामस ।
Interestingly in || 14-5 || of this fourteenth chapter it is clarified that –
सत्वं-रजस्-तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसंभवाः |
निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम्  || 14-5 ||
What is mentioned here is –
All types of qualities – whether सत्वम्  chaste, रजस् average or तमः unchaste – they all cause a binding of the अव्ययम्, of that which is basically unchangeable, imperishable, constant, but has influence of the गुणाः on having become देहिनम् i.e. embodied
The ultimate objective advocated in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता is that one should aspire to reach a state, which is beyond the binding of bodily existence.
Interestingly, even chaste qualities are qualities and hence would cause the binding. Hence the advice is to go beyond all types of qualities, to aspire for गुणातीत state
11 सः = he
12 उच्यते = is called

He,
  • who is (or has become) equanimous between sorrows or happiness,
  • who is (or has become) steadfast by himself,
  • who is (or has become) equanimous between heaps of stones or of gold,
  • who is (or has become) balanced of likeables or unlikeables,
  • who has boldness (or forbearance to take things as they come),
  • who is (or has become) balanced between praise or hate,
  • who is (or has become) balanced between respects or dishonour,
  • who is (or has become) balanced between friends and foes,
  • who has given up all concept that anything begins at all
is called as one who has transcended all qualitativeness.
टिप्पणयः ।
I thought it good to do away with the usual tabulations of “समासानां विग्रहाः” “शब्दानां विश्लेषणम्”, “धातुसाधितानां विश्लेषणम्” “क्रियापदानां विश्लेषणम्” at least for this lesson. As would have been noticed, almost every other word in these two verses is a सामासिक-शब्दः । It is better to study them in good enough detail than by using the usual tabular structure. This way, it has been possible to present the study with many more details than just the grammar and शब्दार्थः । In the course of detailing the study, it has become possible to also quote related other references.
As noted earlier we should also study –
भूत-भावोद्भव-करो विसर्गः कर्म-संज्ञितः || 8-3 ||
We shall take this up in Lesson 32
शुभमस्तु ।
