Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 27

Learning Sanskrit by fresh approach – Lesson 27
संस्कृतभाषायाः नूतनाध्ययनस्य सप्तविंशतितमः (२७) पाठः ।
The सुभाषितम् of this lesson makes a forthright statement and came to mind almost as a corollary of the previous lesson -
पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलमन्नं सुभाषितम् ।
मूढैः पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंज्ञा विधीयते ।।

७ टिप्पणयः ।
1As in the सुभाषितम् of the previous lesson, this one also chides at people running after materialistic affluence.
2The word सुभाषितम् here has more-than-one meanings. By one meaning it refers to the vast number of such short श्लोकाः, really a treasure in संस्कृत literature, which we have undertaken to explore.
3By another meaning it suggests good knowledge at large, which is what one should strive to acquire, not the bits of stone. One must of course make sure that one is well-provided with the basic needs of sustenance, viz. water जलम् and food अन्नम् । Having done that, the next thing one should strive to acquire is good knowledge. Aren’t there the people who are filthy rich, but have no great acclaim as being knowledgeable people ? If there are two persons, one filthy rich but not knowledgeable and another a very knowledgeable person, not so rich, certainly the knowledgeable person will command much better respect.
4The third meaning suggests that one should cultivate a sweet tongue. Never speak bad. Whatever you speak, it should be good speech. This is called as “अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यम्” in the seventeenth chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता  See this श्लोकः –
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यम् सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् ।
स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्ग्मयं तप उच्यते ||17-15||
5I think it will be good to extend this lesson to cover study of this श्लोकः as well.
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यम् सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् ।
स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्ग्मयं तप उच्यते ||

B-७ टिप्पणयः ।
1For a good interpretation of the word उद्वेग, I looked up in Apte’s dictionary. There it was mentioned “See under उद्विज्”
When I looked up for उद्विज् I got the interpretation “6 A to be grieved or afflicted, to be agitated नोद्विजेत् प्राप्य चाप्रियम् Bg 5-20” (Bg = श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता) On seeing this reference, it came to mind that there is a much better reference available, of the use of both the words उद्विज् and उद्वेगः in
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः |
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ||12-15 ||
This is a fantastic explanation of what all agitation उद्वेगः must not happen by speech. Only when one gets such command of अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यम् over one’s speech, one can be called as तपस्वी ।
2This श्लोकः 12-15 also merits a detailed study. When I started off with our सुभाषितम् “पृथिव्याम् त्रीणि रत्नानि ….” I did not realize that the word “सुभाषितम्” will lead to study of one श्लोकः after another.
3The words सत्यम् and प्रियम् also remind of another सुभाषितम् about how one’s speech should be
सत्यम् ब्रूयात् प्रियम् ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् ।
प्रियम् नानृतं ब्रूयात् एतत् सज्जनलक्षणम् ||
This सुभाषितम् also merits a detailed study.
4It is also to be noted that in this श्लोकः 17-15 स्वाध्यायः and अभ्यसनम् are distinctly detailed. By स्वाध्यायः self-study one learns. And in olden times the process of learning was by वाणी । गुरोः वाणी शिष्यस्य श्रुतौ । What is learnt must become fully understood, should get set, should stay registered in the memory for all times. That would need अभ्यसनम् i.e. exercising with it, practicing with it. Remember the study of “तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन (Bg 4-34) studied in Lesson # 17 and detailing of the word सेवया there ?
5Actually this श्लोकः 17-15 is one in a sequel of six श्लोकाः from 17-14 to 17-19. In 17-14 to 17-16 तपः are detailed in all their three aspects – शारीरम्, वाङ्ग्मयम् and मानसम् । And in 17-17 to 17-19 gradation of तपांसि into सात्विकम्, राजसम् and तामसम् is detailed.
Not that we shall study all these in detail, but this is mentioned just to give an idea, that what all comprehensive thought is involved in the word “तपः” and what all तपाचरणम् would make one a तपस्वी !
Typically one तपः would extend over a period of twelve years.
6In a separate study of the श्लोकः of लाकिनी शक्तिः it was seen that the word वेदाः may also be used to denote value 4. Likewise, the word तपः for the value 12.
What all definitive words can likewise be used for different numerical values ?
Does that become something for स्वाध्यायः ?
शुभमस्तु ।
