This सुभाषितम्  is about some underlying phenomenon, which makes things happen, the way they do, though often the phenomenon defeats explanation.

पतङ्गस्य उदये पुण्डरीकम विकसति ।lotus blossoms on sunrise
हिमरश्मौ उद्गते चन्द्रकान्तः द्रवति च ।The “चन्द्रकान्त” jewel melts by rising of moon

७. टिप्पणयः
  1. This सुभाषितम् is in the drama मालविकाग्निमित्रम्  by महाकविः कालिदासः
  2. Of the two corroborating evidences provided in support of the observation in first two lines, the evidence of a lotus blooming on sunrise is a fact. The other of a चन्द्रकान्त jewel melting with moon’s rising is a poetic axiom.
  3. Nonetheless the statement does motivate one to deliberate why and how things get related to each other. It is only such motivation, which led to many scientific discoveries. One good evidence is of the phenomenon of gravity.
  4. There is some philosophical significance also to this statement as endorsed by the shlokaH in 13th chapter in श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता. There it is mentioned –

Nature, as a fundamental principle, which pervades the Universe is said to be the motivator behind what is to be done, the reason (for it being done) and the action of it being done.
पुरुषः सुखदुःखानां भोक्तृत्वे हेतुः उच्यते ।The fundamental principle “puruShaH” is said to be the motivator (and/or the reason) behind experiencing the happinesses and sorrows.
B.७. टिप्पणयः
  1. Philosophical principle of what internal (hidden, incomprehensible) reason is suggested by महाकवि कालिदास in his सुभाषितम् is explained in terms of the fundamental principles of “प्रकृति” and “पुरुष” in the श्लोकः in भगवद्गीता.
  2. In the first line there is the mention of the trinity of (a) what is to be done (b) the reason for it being done and (c) the action of it being done. Such trinities exist in many different contexts – (a) happenings of events minute or large (b) the cause and effect relationships that dictate all those events happening (c) knowledge of the happenings and the underlying cause-effect relationships.
  3. The entire chapter 13 in भगवद्गीता is so rich in dwelling on many fundamental philosophical concepts that संत ज्ञानेश्वर devoted to this chapter as many as 1300 verses out of total 9000+ verses (14 percent) of his commentary on भगवद्गीता. Number of श्लोकाः in the thirteenth chapter in भगवद्गीता are 35 out of total 700 (5 percent).
  4. Commentary of संत ज्ञानेश्वर  is of average 36+ verses per श्लोकः in गीता. I am too naïve, unqualified and uninitiated to dwell on the in-depth meaning of this श्लोकः.
  5. Yet, the सुभाषितम् and the श्लोकः together provide enough motivation for one to delve deeper and deeper into the rich treasure of philosophical thought that is enshrined in संस्कृत literature in general.
शुभमस्तु !
